Does modern handball rely too much on physicality now compared to 10-15 years ago?

I’ve been rewatching older Champions League matches recently and one thing that stands out is how different the pace and physicality feel compared to current top-level handball.

Modern handball is obviously faster and more athletic overall, but sometimes it feels like teams can overwhelm opponents purely through physical intensity and rotation depth now.

Especially defensively:

  • bigger defenders
  • more aggressive contact
  • constant switching
  • faster counter transitions
  • more emphasis on explosiveness

At the same time though, current tactical systems are way more advanced than older eras.

I’m not saying older handball was “better,” but I do wonder whether certain types of players would struggle more today because the game seems so physically relentless now.

Watching teams like Magdeburg and Barça recently, it almost feels like every player on court has to be an elite athlete first before anything else.

Do you guys think the sport has shifted too far toward physicality, or is this just natural evolution?

Which coach currently feels the MOST like a “college basketball” coach?

Hard to explain exactly what I mean by this, but certain coaches just feel completely tied to the identity of the sport itself.

Not necessarily the best coach.

I mean the kind of coach where:

  • their sideline reactions become memes
  • they own one specific style forever
  • opposing fans irrationally hate them
  • their press conferences sound identical every year
  • and they somehow become part of conference culture itself

College basketball has always felt more personality-driven than other sports to me because coaches stay so central to programs historically.

Even now in the portal era, there are still a few coaches where the team immediately reflects their personality the second you turn on a game.

Who’s the most “this guy IS college basketball” coach right now?
