Der Wäscheständer stand jeden Nachmittag genau im falschen Winkel

An drei sonnigen Nachmittagen fiel die Leistung unserer Balkonmodule gegen halb fünf plötzlich ab. Nicht langsam, wie ich es vom wandernden Schatten der Hauskante erwartet hätte, sondern mit einem deutlichen Knick. Seltsam war nur, dass die Kurve an anderen klaren Tagen ganz normal aussah.

An einem Sonntag saß ich um diese Zeit mit Kaffee auf dem Balkon und konnte dabei zusehen. Der Wäscheständer warf schmale Schattenstreifen über das untere Drittel eines Moduls. Ich zog ihn ein Stück zur Hauswand, und einige Minuten später stieg der Eingangswert in der App wieder an. Unter der Woche hatte ich den Zusammenhang nie gesehen, weil der Ständer meistens schon draußen stand, wenn ich die Kurve kontrollierte.

Die zwei Module sind bei uns an einen Jackery SolarVault 3 Pro angeschlossen. Im Verlauf konnte ich die vorherigen Einbrüche ebenfalls sehen. Die Uhrzeit passte nicht jeden Tag exakt, wohl aber zu den Nachmittagen, an denen Wäsche draußen hing. Eine saubere Messreihe ist das nicht, aber für einen Umbau am Balkon reichte mir die Erklärung.

Die Module sind geblieben, wo sie waren. Jetzt markieren zwei kleine Stücke Malerkrepp, wo die Füße des Ständers stehen sollen, und lange Handtücher kommen auf die Seite zur Hauswand. Seitdem habe ich den harten Knick an klaren Nachmittagen nicht mehr gesehen. Wie viel Ertrag das bringt, kann ich nicht seriös ausrechnen, weil Temperatur und Dunst jedes Mal etwas anders waren.

Meine Partnerin findet die Klebestreifen hässlich. Damit hat sie recht. Sie sind aber noch da, und ich muss nicht jedes Mal die Module verdächtigen, wenn am Nachmittag die Kurve absackt.

My blackout kit as a ground floor renter, no generator. What am I missing?

I spent too long looking at generators I cannot run in a small ground floor flat with a shared garden and a no noise rule from the landlord. So I built the kit around quiet electricity instead. The goal was not to run the whole flat. It was to keep the fridge, the router, a couple of lights, and a fan alive until the grid comes back.

The core is a plug in solar battery on the balcony, clamps on the railing, plugs into a normal outlet. Mine is a Jackery SolarVault 3 Pro. It charges every day whether there is an outage or not, so I do not have to remember to keep it topped up. I keep the freezer section of the fridge preloaded with a couple of big ice packs, which is honestly the part that does the most for fridge runtime.

Other things in the kit: a USB lantern, two head torches, enough canned and dry food for three days, a camping stove with canisters stored in a metal box, and a hand crank radio that I mostly use to test once a month. The battery is the only expensive part, everything else is budget gear. The realistic plan is 24 hours of low stress power, then 48 more hours of food and light rationing if needed.

Using a small home battery to dodge peak rate when the car needs a midweek top up, the boring math

Straight up, and i believed this too at first: a small home battery, mine is about 2.5 kWh, does not charge your car in any meaningful sense. The car wants forty something kWh, the battery is a rounding error against that. So this is not one of those "power your EV from a power station" posts, that maths never works.

What it actually does, and i only figured this out after a month of just letting it do its thing, is stop the rest of the house from undermining the cheap charging window. My car is already scheduled to charge during the off peak window on a time of use tariff, that part is just the car timer. The problem was that during the expensive daytime and evening hours the fridge, cooking, and everything else was still pulling at the day rate. So i charge the home battery from the balcony panels plus a bit during the same cheap window, then run the household loads off it through the expensive part of the day. The car charges cheap, and the house stops buying peak rate on top of it.

I should say i did not set out to do this, it just sort of happened. The battery was originally for the balcony solar, the EV came later, and one day i noticed on the app that the house was pulling from the battery during the evening while the car was charging on its own schedule. The two things were not stepping on each other and i had not even planned it that way.

The boring math is just the spread. Take the gap between your off peak unit rate and your day rate, multiply by the kWh you can actually shift through the battery in a day, which for me is most of a 2.5 kWh cycle. It is not life changing money, it is a modest amount that compounds over a year. The honest version is that the savings come from the tariff spread and your usage pattern, not from the battery being clever. I happen to use a Jackery SolarVault unit for it but any home battery with decent scheduling does the same job.

If you do not have a time of use tariff, or you are out of the house all day so there is no daytime load to cover, the benefit mostly evaporates and i would not bother. The win only exists if you have a real price gap and you are home enough to consume what you shifted.

Adding a weatherproof outdoor socket on the balcony for a plug-in battery, what the electrician flagged

For about half a year my plug-in solar battery was fed by an extension cord snaked through the gap in the balcony door, which worked but bugged me every time it rained and every time i closed the door on the cable. So i finally got an electrician in to install a proper weatherproof socket on the balcony itself, and a few things he flagged are worth passing on for anyone about to do the same.

First, the socket needs to be on a circuit with proper GFCI protection, and he checked it was not sharing a circuit with something heavy like the kitchen circuit. Second, the enclosure has to be a real outdoor rated box where the cover actually closes over the plug, not an indoor socket with a flap pretending to be weatherproof. Third, and this is the one i would not have thought of, he set it up so the cable forms a drip loop, hanging down before it reaches the socket so rain runs off the low point instead of tracking along the cable into the connection.

He was also blunt about what he sees go wrong most often: people daisy chaining extension cords outdoors and leaving cheap indoor cable in the sun for years until the insulation goes brittle. The battery itself is plug and play and totally fine, the risk is always the improvised socket and cable around it, not the unit.

The actual job was a short run and a morning of work, and the cost was reasonable against not having a cord pinched in a door for another winter. The unit, a Jackery in my case, just plugs into the new outdoor socket and the whole thing finally looks like it belongs there rather than like a temporary lash up. If your battery lives outside permanently, spend the money on the socket it plugs into, that is the part worth doing properly.
