Why is self harm considered worse than any other maldaptive coping strategy?
Please do not engage if this is a triggering discussion for you! I just need some help in understanding this. I struggle to conceptualize moderate self harm as inherently worse than any other unhealthy coping strategy, like using alcohol, drugs, over or undereating, and various other strategies that result in short or long term harm. I want to quit self harming, but thinking of it as "inherently bad" isn't working for me because logically I struggle to envision it as any worse than other coping mechanisms. In some ways, I think it's better than long term alcohol or drug use, which I also suffer from. Please help me think of reasons why it is worse, or otherwise worth quitting, even if it's not "as bad for you." Thank you. Not sure where else to seek this kind of advice.
