Urbina Gran Reserva Especial 2001

When you get a chance to pick both dinner and wine for Father's Day you just have to go with a tomahawk steak and aged Rioja.

Notes: tar, tobacco, leather, cedar, some blackberry and plum compote on the nose.

On the palate the wine is dense, tannins are well integrated, but still prominent (despite six hour decant). Same leather, tar and tobacco on the palate with blackberry, prunes and black pepper to boot.

My first Urbina of this age and designation, I am more of a Lopez de Heredia fan.

It's darker, more black fruit driven, less oxidative in style and denser than similarly aged LdH wines. Very enjoyable and a great value as Rioja always is (about 60 usd)

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there!
