Hi!
This will be my first summer living in Calgary and I'm super eager to do some river floating, as I've never done anything of the kind before.
I plan to keep it VERY chill (easy floating with a beer, not so much rafting) and stick to slower parts, at least as much as the river allows.
Would inflatable rafts be okay for this? Can I use an inflatable tube, or would that not be sturdy/heavy-duty enough? Are paddles necessary?
Bonus: if anyone has any suggestions for *affordable* raft/etc options, would be eternally grateful :)
EDIT: Totally heard re: no beers! Thanks for the heads up!!
Tired of having to dodge electric vehicles I decided to have to dodge a car half way up the trail today
Hello!
I wanted to start a discussion about the recent sexual assault that occurred at Henry Wisewood Highschool.
For those that don’t know, a school coach was arrested for grooming and sexually assaulting a teenage girl at the school over the course of 2 years. He also sent an explicit video of himself to a group of boys by accident.
This is extremely disturbing, and it’s massively disappointing that this happened to this girl while she was at school.
When you look the perpetrator up, you see he has posted many photos of girls from Henry Wisewood on his facebook. That already is a very inappropriate thing to be doing, and it’s concerning that this person wasn’t flagged as being dangerous earlier.
I’m a 27 year old women, and I was also groomed and assaulted as a teenager. This subject is very important to me because I know what this process looks like and how intensely painful it is.
We should use this event to open conversations about sexual abuse and sexual education in Alberta. We need to remember that when kids turn 12 and they go to middle school, their community and culture drastically changes. There’s more talk about sex, more kids, more hostility, and less facilitated community.
If we don’t give kids answers about sex they fill those gaps in on their own, often leading to poor understandings of sexuality.
We need to have the ability to have these conversations with young people to keep them safe. I think that includes talk about sexual harassment, age gap/power dynamics in sexuality, pornography and pornography addiction, shame in sexuality, and identifying sexual abuse.
In my generation, sex education involved basic biology and the STI talk. It didn’t really relate to day to day experiences.
Some other things to consider…
-Would it be more effective to give parents sexual education, considering sexual education up until this point has been limited?
-Social work students need practical hours to complete their degree. Can we involve social workers in supporting proper development in public school?
I’ve heard from Calgarians across the city: I support keeping Calgary’s free fare zone. It makes downtown safer and more accessible. We need to support local businesses, and keep transit a practical option for workers, students, seniors, and visitors making short trips through our core.
The majority report would add one net seat to Edmonton, which the transposition shows would go to the NDP.
The minority report would add two hybrid ridings to the city’s west.
The minority report would take part of Edmonton-South West, won by the NDP in 2023 by 14.3 percentage points, and draw a new riding west into the old Drayton Valley-Devon riding.
Under its new name, Edmonton-Enoch-Devon, the UCP would win the riding by 148 votes, or 0.92 percentage points (the closest margin in the city), the transposition shows.
All told, the two added ridings in Edmonton in the minority proposal would potentially see two seats added to the UCP’s tally, although one (Edmonton-Enoch-Devon) would be a toss-up.
We’ve been up the Calgary tower (very cool btw locals!) and noticed they have moved the 4-line track to the east of the tower before it crosses the Elbow River. In doing so they have taken a straight line and added a kink which seems super sub-optimum for a goods line (image 1) from a straight line (as it still appears on Google maps image 2)
Being nerds, we’re keen to understand why this has been done. Is it a temporary solution? Looks like some development work is ongoing in that part of town but seems a lot of effort to move a track like this.
Can anyone answer this question to settle a debate?
Thanks - a nerdy British tourist
I host friends every week, and I'm getting tired of cooking.
Let's assume potluck isn't an option, I just want to provide food for everyone, where do you go for affordable takeout that'll feed 10-15 people?
Happy Wednesday!
This is a continuation of my pattern of posting what I think are decent grocery deals with the hope that this will save some people some money. As noted previously this is heavily skewed to items that I and my family eat. There are probably additional items that are good deals but I don't know it because they aren't items I use but hopefully my list is still useful to you.
A few quick reminders:
Superstore, No Frills, FreshCo and Save on Foods are generally willing to price match identical products from (some) other major grocery stores if you show them the item in the competitor’s flyer while checking out so knowing what is on sale at stores that you don't visit can still be useful. There are some restrictions on this... FreshCo won't price match Safeway or Sobeys. Superstore (at least some locations) won't price match Coop. The No Frills on 85st SW won't price match FreshCo.
Finally, thank you to everyone that has posted positive comments. It's always nice to receive positive feedback.

I’ve been seeing posts regarding new, high end Hotels in Calgary being proposed over the past few days. If anyone remembers, The Cecil Hotel in Calgary was infamous for being the “by the hour” Hotel, dive bar off the lobby, frequent news stories and more urban myths than I can remember. I’m a little out of the loop, but, what Hotel in Calgary now holds the moniker of the sleaziest, sketchiest, down on your luck hotel around our great city?
We have 6 goslings on a roof in one of the buildings in my complex at work. Building management won't do anything, they say "they will fly away and we can't intervene". However , they cannot fly and cannot get on the ledge of the roof to jump since there is a lip on the roof , they're too small. Rescue groups are very busy and haven't been able to come help. Was told to make a ramp for them to get up on ledge, building management won't allow us since they will "fly away" .what do we do?! Parents are still near by . The don't have food or water.
I need some sobering advice from locals. I have a credit from an airline that I need to use in the next couple months.
I live in BC on a tight budget…meaning I’m trying to skip a hotel bill.
Is it possible to fly in to Calgary on a very early flight, have a bus tour company pick me up from the airport (as opposed to a hotel), then drop me off at the airport at the end of the day for the flight home?
Yes, I could look up all the dinosaur tour companies to ask if they could do an airport pickup/drop off, but I’d like some local opinions too.
Am I crazy?
Any recommendations for tour bus companies?
Edit: Thank you everyone! Perhaps the itinerary might be too tight and stressful. But a few mentioned an alternative: Calgary. Perhaps a day trip to the Calgary Stampede would be more practical? I’ll have to check the expiry date of the airline credit.
Having nam flashbacks.
