Do small ecommerce stores hurt themselves by trying too hard to look “professional”?

Something I’ve noticed recently with smaller ecommerce brands especially pet stores is that a lot of them try so hard to look like huge corporate brands that the websites end up feeling cold or fake.

Meanwhile, some of the smaller stores with simpler layouts actually feel more trustworthy because they focus more on usability than trying to impress visitors with flashy design.
