Need a lot of wood and need it fast? Park your ship up on the coastline of the densest patch of forest you can find, get your crew drunk on some good old reload speed (Gunroom) grog and just start firing cannon volleys in. Keep firing until the tree patch is gone or you run out of grog buff then disembark, loot and repeat.

I was able to obtain ~1500 wood using a Brig with 24 pounders over approx 30 mins as a test using this method, which is over x3 more than what a merchant or manually cutting can get you in the same amount of time.
