Rescue Boerboel
Hi, i had a meet and greet with a female BB today, 3 years old, on death row but rescued from the pound so no history. Looking for advice.
I have large guardian breed experience, yet found myself quite humbled by this girls sheer confidence and prescence. I instantly understood the seriousness of dog and that there was nothing average about the breed!
She was great greeting me and knew basic obedience and was very receptive to treats. A little more passive and stubborn when she knew theyd run out 🙃😂
All in all a fantastic dog that i cant believe someone isnt missing.
We also shared a couple of sweet moments of connection, i sat on a chair and she came to sit with me pushing all her body weight into me, also laid at my feet for a fuss.
Now to my concerns, the rescue do a 5 night home trial to see if things work out. You can then decide to finalise the adoption. Great idea imo. My reflections from the meet and greet and doing research here however, is that i can tell she is going to want to feel useful, and most content when observing around the perimeter of my/her home. I live in an extremely small home with a medium sixed garden. Im terribly anxious that this wont feel 'enough' for her.
Im very active and she was extremely good on our walk today but i saw her truly come into her element getting back to the kennels and seeing if everything was still in order and getting back 'on duty' on the perimeter. This seemed to trump the walk in terms of her happiness.
Im worried what i have to offer wont be enough. Im worried we click on the home trial yet the environment could be claustrophobic for her and i have to break my heart and let this dog down returning her to kennels.
I know all dogs are different but in general would you say putting a BB in a small environment is putting a round peg in a square hole? Or can this be acceptable alongside plenty exercise?
I really just want to make good decisions here for this dog who has been already let down.
