2-day solo travel in Amsterdam

Was on a work trip and decided to extend my stay by 2 days on personal expense. This was my 2nd time in Amsterdam and first solo travel experience (last time was business travel only)

Trip Details

  • Start & End Dates - last week of April 2026
  • Route & Places Visited - Nemo Museum (one day was not enough!), Jordaan area, Dam square, random walking around the canals.
  • Number of Days - 2

Costs & Budget

  • Total Trip Cost - ~40k INR (excluding flights, as they were paid for)
  • Daily Budget (approx) - 50-60 EUR should be more than enough, mostly for food and very light shopping. I planned with this budget but ended up under-utlizing it as I didn't feel very hungry looking at the prices and converting them to INR lol
  • Major Expenses - stay was the major expense with a total of about 290 EUR for 2 nights.

Accommodation

  • Stayed in a single-person room in a hotel. I think I stayed in a "central" location (literally, as my hotel was close to Amsterdam Central station). Also, it was seemingly peak season so the rates were higher than usual. When planning for the trip, I was considering whether to stay in a hostel or a hotel, but as it was my first time plus I luckily found a hotel for a one-person stay (most others were dual-sharing), I went ahead with staying in the hotel. Though the room was small, I think I appreciated the privacy and the solo experience. If I go again next time, I will take a risk and stay in a hostel, just for the "experience".

Transport

  • Everything was walking distance from my hotel. The trams are cool and convenient though, I used them for office travel and transferring to my personal hotel.

Food & Experiences

  • Had a "Say Cheese" sandwhich at one of the restraunts, which was super cool and unique.
  • An apple pie as an evening snack which surprisingly made me full and skip dinner.
  • There was also a random shop I want to that prints your Iris onto different products, which I found to be pretty unique. Unfortunately, they take time to ship and charge extra, but I almost wanted to buy something as I liked the concept.
  • Nemo museum was very cool and highly recommended for science lovers. Do not miss the rooftop for great views and food. TBH it was also a bit overwhelming and I think 1 day is not enough if want to check out everything in detail and do the activities. It costed around 22 EUR.
  • I also passed my Anne Frank house but didn't enter, the tickets were sold out.
  • Other shops (which I guess are named as "museums" for touristy reasons) like cheese museum, tulip museum.
  • For personally, I did very little shopping -- just bought some cheese and a fridge magnet from a local shop near my hotel that I just walked into impromptu.
  • I also went to one of the well known super-markets there and bought a thing or two. For some reason, super-markets in another countries just hit different.
  • I also wanted to take the ferry and go to a considerably far-away restaurant, but felt a bit overwhelmed to figure out the public transportation last minute as I had a flight the next early morning. Maybe next time. 🙂
