Alex Uballez does not speak for Albuquerque on the DEA fentanyl scandal
I am sure many of you have seen the recent AP article about the DEA allowing fentanyl shipments to go unseized in New Mexico.
This is disgusting. And more unsettling is that former U.S. Attorney and mayoral candidate Alex Uballez supported the policy and is actively defending it.
His argument was basically that authorities allowing some shipments to go unseized helps them build bigger cases.
That may sound nice in a courtroom / press conference. It does not sound neat to people living in Albuquerque.
This city has literally been drowning in fentanyl, overdoses, property crime, and families getting destroyed. We are not numbers in some federal strategy. We are the people who live with the consequences when investigations are allowed to get out of control.
Nobody here voted to be the downside risk in a federal experiment. Nobody agreed that fentanyl pills should be allowed to move through our neighborhoods so prosecutors could maybe build a cleaner case later.
I've constatntly heard “one pill can kill.” So how can the same government say that publicly, then privately allow hundreds of thousands (millions per the whistleblower) of pills to keep moving?
From where I sit, it looks like Uballez treated our city as collateral damage he was willing to accept.
This needs to be investigated. If i see one more press conference about a record bust while ignoring what was allowed to hit the streets before that bust happened im going to lose my mind.
Albuquerque deserved better and New Mexico certainly deserved better
