Vandalism in Rio Rancho

My boyfriend lives in the Northern Meadows neighborhood of Rio Rancho. He is openly gay and flies a Pride Flag all year in front of his house. Tonight he found that someone had spray painted Jesus is king across his driveway. I have always thought Rio Rancho is an awful place full of homophobic bigots and I hate when I have to go there. Now I hate it even more and so does he.

Why swamp coolers will kill half of the New Mexican population, if the temperature in a heatwave exceeds ~115°F. No, I'm not being alarmist, it's thermal physics. If you're not convinced, downvote me. But read this please, because it could save your life.

You're reading that title, and thinking I'm a doomsdaying dumbass. I'm not. Approximately half the homes in the middle Rio Grande Valley use swamp coolers. All of you know that a swamp cooler increases humidity in the house. When it's unbearably hot, people turn these things on high and leave them on. It doesn't take much for the house to reach 80% humidity, especially when there's been any recent rain.

But here's the part where the swamp cooler kills you. Anyone familiar with the term "wet bulb event" knows that: (extreme heat + extreme humidity = human body can't cool off from sweat).

A swamp cooler at peak efficiency will only cool the temperature by a maximum of 20°F. At 80% humidity, a wet bulb event happens at 95°F. Which means that if it gets up to 115°F outside, we're going to have a mass casualty event. Climate change is making that kind of heatwave more likely every year.

The experts know this. The people don't. And the politicians are ignoring it. This should be the number one priority of the New Mexico government. We have to provide massive subsidies for every home to swap from swamp coolers to refrigerated air. Otherwise, it's not a question of if hundreds of thousands of New Mexicans will die, but when.

Edit: To address a few narratives in the comments

  1. I am talking about indoor humidity, not outdoor humidity.

  2. Yes, it gets up to 80% in many houses, I've measured it. One of the problems is that people think if they open their windows and doors, then they're letting the cold air out. People are going to be even more hesitant to open them if we get to 115°F. And even with good air flow, a large swamp cooler on high mode is dumping gallons of water into the indoor air, that can be very hard to combat.

  3. Local HVAC companies are already getting "swamped" with calls from customers who think their swamp coolers aren't working because it's hot inside. Again, it only cools it off by 20°F, which means when it's 100°F outside, it's 80°F inside.

  4. Yes, we can get increased humidity from rain at the same time as a heatwave. That's literally been happening over the past few weeks. Even a modest increase in outdoor humidity, makes a swamp cooler far less efficient at cooling the temperature indoors.

  5. This is a fair one, I did say half the population would die. It would have been more accurate to say half the population is at RISK of dying.

  6. Just turning the pump off, to let the fans air at the house sounds good. But in a 115°F heatwave, turning the pump off means that you're pumping that superheated air directly into the house, and raising the temperature to dangerous levels.

  7. What can you do in the event of a 115°F heatwave, when you have a swamp cooler? The best thing to do is get refrigerated air. Unfortunately, that costs $10,000, while a swamp cooler costs $1,000. If you can't afford that, and we do get this kind of heatwave, open the doors and windows, turn on every fan, maybe even buy a several hundred dollar dehumidifier. Get the humidity down. And have a window AC unit in at least one room, so you can drop the temperature without raising the humidity. If that doesn't work, find a building with refrigerated air.

Does anyone have a single elderly gerbil who's mate has passed? Maybe we can combine them so they are not lonely in their retirement?

It was just a thought. My daughter had two female gerbils but one of them passed a few months ago. The remaining gerbil is 3 years old- so there's not much time left.

I fear she is lonely. But we can't get another gerbil because here pretty soon, we will be in the same position again. They aren't really supposed to be by themselves.

I figure, there's gotta be someone out there who is in the same position with their gerbil pair. I thought maybe you could let us have your elderly gerbil and we can see if they get along? They would be in a good home and loved by my 12 year old daughter and I.

I'm also open to rehoming our gerbil. But my daughter would need some convincing. She's pretty close to her girl. The gerbil is very sweet and not a biter.

I don't really know what to do here. But i figure two gerbils not being lonely before they pass is better than two gerbils living their last months alone.

Thanks for reading.

Associate Professor Geoffrey Miller

Ok, so I'm gonna go on a bit of a rant here ig, but I am rn in Pr. Geoffrey Millers Psychology of Human Sexuality class, and he kinda gave me creepy vibes, so I wanted to do some background research on him, and he is actually just such a piece of sh*t. He is transphobic, misogynistic, and Islamophobic to the point where I feel like it's genuinely dangerous. Below are screenshots from his twitter account. Unfortunately, since he doesn't say these in class and because he's tenured, I don't think there's anything that can be done. But I genuinely don't feel safe around him after reading some of these posts:

Edit: just brought this up in his class and he responded with a smug “I’m exercising my freedom of speech.” He is not scared because he knows the university will not do anything; so, WE MUST

ICE in SE Albuquerque This Morning

There are at least three groups of ICE agents working along Zuni between San Pedro and Pennsylvania. They’re in unmarked trucks and SUVs with Texas license plates.

The group I observed were wearing vests that said “Police ICE” on the back. There were no APD or NMSP officers present.

Are you missing your malinois?

Seen on Pennsylvania and Prospect- he’s collared, but seemed spooked and wouldn’t come when gently approached.

Free RÜFÜS DU SOL seats — couldn’t make it!

Couldn’t make it!
First come, first served. Completely legit

I just don’t want the seats to go to waste.
I’m not asking for anything in return. I’d just appreciate it if you’d take a look at a GoFundMe for someone I know who’s going through a really difficult time. I can send you the link privately.

Thanks, ABQ! 🙏

I'm excited for of course chile season (where is your favorite place to get it?)I'm also excited because I've gotten almost obsessed with making things out of my garden and I'm gonna start making teas , and I discovered an herb store in Old Town I can't wait to try that should help me with that! Also, in other good news , I read in the news El Niño may be bringing us some extra moisture in the coming months

Seeking a Personal Trainer

I am looking for a trainer experienced in working with mid aged women and body recomposition. I have about 10lbs to lose and want to build muscle. I am active and already weight training. My expectations are realistic. I just want my pants to fit better! 😛 Also, I have a photo shoot coming up in October and want to get my program dialed in. Ideally, I’d like for someone to meet up initially and then design a program I can do on my own.
Thanks! 💪
EDIT:: I already belong to a gym

Le Bakery: Go help out a local small business

Le Bakery’s bread machine is down, so they don’t have sandwiches for sale today. They do have their usual amazing pastries and matchas though! If you’re in the area, maybe drop by and help them out on a tough day.

Technical glitches like that are doubly hard for a barely-year-old business still working to establish itself in the community. They’re my favorite cafe in town, and I want them to stick around Albuquerque for a long time!!

Their matchas are already amazing, but the store owners were just in Japan and told me they learned all about matcha and have plans to make what they sell even better.

The pictures are of what I bought from them today. Everything was delicious, but the churro croissant was especially to die for.

Albuquerque needs more of these small, non-corporate businesses that truly put pride into their work and want to give back to the community. So if you have a chance, go support them, please. (No, I don’t work for them or have any affiliation with them at all besides being a regular customer!)
