My early-2000s aluminum Trek / Villager frame seems to have damaged or stripped bottom bracket threads. It is not very obvious in the photos, but a Shimano BB-UN300 (same type/size as the old Shimano BB-UN26) starts threading in, then gets stuck halfway through the shell.

What are my realistic options here?

Can the threads usually be chased/repaired with a bottom bracket tapping tool like Park Tool BTS-1, or is an old aluminum frame basically finished at that point?

The tool costs more than the whole bike, so I am trying to decide whether repair makes sense or if replacing the frame/bike is the smarter move.
