Solstice, *, Newcastle

I had heard great things about Kenny Atkinson’s Solstice but was sadly quite disappointed. The sauces felt overpowering in most of the dishes. Our least favourite course was the fried chicken skin first course which was very heavy and oily. Overall the course felt interesting but not well balanced. It also felt like they were overcomplicating certain dishes in order to make it sound more ‘fancy’ and impressive. One nice thing was that the chef himself would come and present some of the dishes explaining the different steps in the cooking.

Caractère (*), London

This is the biggest fine dining surprise I have ever had. We went there expecting good food but we were honestly surpised by how good it was. We preferred it to Core, Helene Darroze and fat duck (though admittedly we did really enjoy Core). The tuna tartare with a mandarin ponzu is one of my all time favourite dish. The chocolate dessert was also fantastic. My least favourite dish turned out to be the house special Celeriac “cacio e pepe”. Apologies I forgot to take a picture of the menu. It is relatively easy to get a reservation and not too pricey at about £160 per person

Trid (Culinary class wars, michelin recommended)

As big fans of the netflix show culinary class war, we decided to try some of the contestants restaurants. Trid from Chef Triple Star was the highlight of our korea trip. It does not have a star yet but is certainly deserving of at least one. It was our second favourite place in Seoul behind Jungsik and honestly we thought it was better than a lot of starred restaurants. In terms of value for money, this is probably the best coming to less than £80 per person not counting drinks. The service was great. It was surprisingly quick but somehow did not make us feel rushed. This lasted less than an hour which really impressed us. My favourites were the truffle choux and the brown rice dessert. If you happen to be in Seoul, it is definitely worth going to especially given the value for money.

On an unrelated note, we were very impressed by Jungsik Seoul and were wondering if the one in NYC which has an additional star is actually any better.

Currently bored so posting some reviews of our favourite restaurants of the last couple of weeks

Sojiki-Nakahigashi (**), Kyoto

This was a kaiseki with foraged food. We were lucky enough to be at the chef’s counter. Despite not being fluent in english, they tried to explain the dishes to us which we appreciated.

The food was delicious but I don’t think it will be to everyone’s palate. Most of the dishes had a refreshing bitterness to them which we loved but can see how some people would not like. The rice was absolutely fantastic. The beef apparently comes from cows that live freely in nature without much human interaction.

This was overall a fantastic experience. In terms of taste, there are definitely restaurants that we prefer but as a concept (foraged food) and the sheer amount of new (to us) and interesting things, this is definitely worth a try.

Hajime (***), Osaka

This was one of the longest (4 hours) and best dining experiences I have ever had. The plating was absolutely gorgeous and the photos do not do it justice. The taste was also exquisite.

The staff and chef were incredibly kind and welcoming. Chef Hajime saw us out and gave us some nice tea jam for home.

Though pricey at about £500 per person for just the tasting menu (no drinks), it is definitely worth going to at least once. Apparently the menu changes based on how many times you have been there; so I am excited to go again

I did not take a photo of every single course but I have posted some of my highlights
