How often do Shopify theme/app updates silently break stores?
I’ve been researching a pattern I keep seeing in Shopify stores:
- theme gets updated → Add to Cart shifts or breaks
- new app installed → mobile menu/layout breaks
- checkout button still looks fine, but something in the flow silently fails
The scary part is most store owners only notice after sales drop or customers complain.
A few merchants told me they now avoid updating themes entirely because they’re afraid of breaking something.
I’m trying to understand:
- How often does this happen to you?
- How do you currently catch these issues before customers do?
- Do you manually test after every update, or just hope for the best?
