How often do Shopify theme/app updates silently break stores?

I’ve been researching a pattern I keep seeing in Shopify stores:

  • theme gets updated → Add to Cart shifts or breaks
  • new app installed → mobile menu/layout breaks
  • checkout button still looks fine, but something in the flow silently fails

The scary part is most store owners only notice after sales drop or customers complain.

A few merchants told me they now avoid updating themes entirely because they’re afraid of breaking something.

I’m trying to understand:

  1. How often does this happen to you?
  2. How do you currently catch these issues before customers do?
  3. Do you manually test after every update, or just hope for the best?

Do theme/app updates silently break Shopify stores more often than we admit?

I’ve been researching a pattern in Shopify stores:

  • theme updated → Add to Cart breaks
  • app installed → mobile menu breaks
  • layout shifts after “minor” changes
  • merchants only notice after sales drop or customer complaints

I found dozens of examples across Reddit + Shopify Community, and it seems more common than I expected.

So I’m curious:

  1. How often does this happen to you (or your clients)?
  2. How do you currently catch it before customers do?
  3. Do you manually test after every theme/app update?

I’m building a small tool to automatically test stores after every change (still early).

If this is a real pain for you, I’d love feedback—and a few early testers: https://themeguard.framer.website/

Shopify store issues

I’ve been researching Shopify store issues after theme/app updates.

One pattern I keep seeing:

  • Add to cart breaks after theme updates
  • mobile layout shifts after app installs
  • agencies manually debug this after client complaints

I’m trying to understand:

  1. How often does this actually happen in real stores?
  2. How do you currently detect it before customers notice?

I’m collecting feedback from developers/agencies.

If helpful, I documented the idea here (still early stage): https://themeguard.framer.website/
