Biggest enhancement to newer ships

One thing I haven't noticed is people mentioning minor enhancements made to newer ships of the same class.

I sailed on Wonder the other week and noticed what, to me, is a big deal. They use magnets on the bathroom door instead of latches.

To me this is a big deal because, when sailing on older ships of the same class (Oasis and Allure), when the boat was rocky I'd always be annoyed by the clicking of the bathroom door ever so slightly moving around. Now, because they use magnets, nothing ever moves.

Is this a small thing? Yes. But this is definitely a consideration for people that may be light sleepers or just have problems with annoying noises.

First time on Wonder and really enjoying the ship. But just had a "first for me" experience that I hadn't seen posted about before. This is not a complaint, just a posting for information in case someone uses the search function.

I put in a last minute bid for a room upgrade. They say you can get the upgrade as late as the morning of boarding and this wasn't too far off. I got the upgrade the day before. This apparently caused some confusion in the systems.

The boarding documents, including new luggage tags, did not arrive until we were at the port, but our set sail passes had been updated in the app. I thought it was no big deal, but apparently it was.

When the port agent scanned our set sail passes, they were not tied to our account but to the new room. But, at the port, their system is tied to the manifest which had been frozen a few days prior. After a few confused expressions, the port agent checking our passports looked us up by the reservation number and let us through. At this point, I thought it was settled. It was not.

At the next port checkpoint to get onto the ship, the next agent scanned our set sail pass and had the same issue. But then informed us that we were still assigned to the old room and not our upgraded room. They then sent us through to go talk to guest services.

By the time I got to guest services, the app had been updated again to show our old room, which got me even more concerned. But the agent at the desk was able to confirm what had happened (people before us got an upgrade, we got an upgrade once they got their reassignment, and the system at the port goes by the frozen manifest not the live assignment). We thanked them and mentioned that our bags were still tagged with the old room and the agent called housekeeping to inform them of the room change. We were given keys to our new room and told to just trash the ones staged at the door. At this point, surely everything was done, right? Nope!

After a few hours, I decided to check on our bags which had not yet shown up. I walked down to the room we were previously assigned and there sat our bags. Housekeeping didn't get the memo. No big deal, it was on the same deck so I just rolled the bags to my room.

The fun thing was that the people that had the room before us are Pinnacle. They had selected to have an 18 pack of Cokes staged in the room. We didn't touch it and asked our stateroom attendant what to do with it. After some time, their supervisor said we could just keep it. So that's a nice bonus.

Not the smoothest boarding experience, but it all worked out.

My lessons learned here are:

  1. If getting a last minute RoyalUp, bring both sets of boarding documents if possible and just sort it out at guest services

  2. Be prepared for bags to not show up to the new room
