Grease passages

Why would motor end plates not be drilled for grease zerks, and is it good practice to have zerks (and relief passages) drilled/installed? Context: 10hp 3p compressor motor. Flat areas are cast into end plates but not drilled. Existing bearings are fine but the grease is pretty old. Shaft end does have a grease fitting. I know over-greasing can be harmful but it seems to me a couple of pumps of grease once a year would be beneficial.
