Apple Music + Google Assistant on the EX30

For anyone else scratching their head over this:
I have Apple Music linked correctly to Google Assistant, but if I ask Google in my EX30 to play something it replies:
“Unable to play music. You can download Apple Music.”

Apple Music works perfectly through CarPlay, so I initially assumed something was wrong with my Google/Apple account setup.

It turns out the issue is the EX30 itself. Google Assistant can recognise Apple Music as your preferred music service, but the EX30 currently does not have the native Apple Music Android Automotive app that Assistant needs to actually play it.

Volvo started rolling out native Apple Music to Google built-in cars in July 2026, but the EX30 is currently not on the supported model list.
So, before wasting time unlinking accounts, resetting Google Assistant or rebooting the infotainment system:
- Apple Music via CarPlay works
- Apple Music can be linked to Google Assistant
- Google Assistant in the EX30 still cannot currently play it natively.

The “you can download Apple Music” message is therefore rather misleading.

Useful workaround: with CarPlay connected, press and hold the steering-wheel voice button to invoke Siri, then just say “Play…” as normal.
Hopefully Volvo brings the native Apple Music app to the EX30 soon. For now, if you’re seeing this exact behaviour, your setup probably isn’t broken.

iPhone digital key - turn “raise to wake” off!

After almost a year of frustration at standing next to my locked car with iPhone in pocket. Arms full and rain pouring down, me tugging at the handle in desperation to get inside my own car when I want to, not when it decides! Swapping my bags and coffee over to the other hand, I reach into my pocket to grab my phone and suddenly, hey presto, she unlocks to let me in. I worked something out! My iPhone had “raise to wake” enabled and it seems the wireless function is disabled unless the phone is ‘awake’… or leave it enabled and just give a quick twerk?💁🏼‍♂️ the car doesn’t seem to have the same problem when it constantly locks and unlocks itself when I’m going up and down mowing the lawn with my phone in my pocket. Beep! Beep! Click! Click! Beep-beep! Click-click!

Overtaking with Adaptive Cruise Control on

In my XC60, with ACC engaged, when I signal left or right, the car instantly starts to accelerate back up to the set speed, resulting in a smooth transition for me and other road users. Why is it then, that the EX30 logic is not the same? You indicate. Nothing happens to the speed, you enter the new lane and only then does the car decide to a speed back up to the set speed. Cue a mini tail back as you manually give the accelerator a quick squirt of pedal… so what should be a purely automatic task is not half manual and quite annoying. Nothing a small code tweak couldn’t sort though. I think it’s less safe than the XC60 response because other drivers are expecting you to increase your speed when overtaking, not casually enter the lane and then accelerate. Again the logic is too binary and not pleasant to drive.

Adaptive cruise control apparently ‘latching’ on the car in front

A couple of times - so quite rarely - I’ve noticed that the car will latch onto the car in front’s speed. So I’m driving with adaptive cruise control at 70mph and the car overtaking me enters the lane in front of me and starts to slowly accelerate my car keeps its set distance instead of its set speed, so of course as the car in front is faster, my car is now travelling at constant 74mph (the speed of the car in front) and I have to slow down and reactivate ACC. On both occasions, the cars in front slowly started moving away from me, so I think it only happens when the rate of change in the distance is below a certain threshold setting related to the ACC criteria. Maybe my car just likes company!

Jerky cruise control

Anyone else experienced the uncomfortable phenomenon when in cruise control whereby the system’s binary response to off nominal speeds results in rapid acceleration / deceleration back to on-condition speed? Even a 1mph difference is felt as a jerk. Long trips on motorways are not smooth and quite tiring almost to the point of turning off the cruise control.

Unable to adjust volume

Radio blaring and radar sensors beeping in reverse. Tried to use the volume down button on the steering wheel but nothing happened. Realised I had a ‘windscreen washer fluid level low’ message on the centre screen and only when I pressed the OK (up volume) button could I decrease the volume. Tried it a few times and sure enough, you cannot turn the volume down until you’ve ok’d any messages. Not cool!
