Apple Music + Google Assistant on the EX30
For anyone else scratching their head over this:
I have Apple Music linked correctly to Google Assistant, but if I ask Google in my EX30 to play something it replies:
“Unable to play music. You can download Apple Music.”
Apple Music works perfectly through CarPlay, so I initially assumed something was wrong with my Google/Apple account setup.
It turns out the issue is the EX30 itself. Google Assistant can recognise Apple Music as your preferred music service, but the EX30 currently does not have the native Apple Music Android Automotive app that Assistant needs to actually play it.
Volvo started rolling out native Apple Music to Google built-in cars in July 2026, but the EX30 is currently not on the supported model list.
So, before wasting time unlinking accounts, resetting Google Assistant or rebooting the infotainment system:
- Apple Music via CarPlay works
- Apple Music can be linked to Google Assistant
- Google Assistant in the EX30 still cannot currently play it natively.
The “you can download Apple Music” message is therefore rather misleading.
Useful workaround: with CarPlay connected, press and hold the steering-wheel voice button to invoke Siri, then just say “Play…” as normal.
Hopefully Volvo brings the native Apple Music app to the EX30 soon. For now, if you’re seeing this exact behaviour, your setup probably isn’t broken.
