Día de Muertos in Oaxaca – visiting cemeteries without a tour?
Hi everyone!
I’ll be in Oaxaca for Día de Muertos this year and wanted to ask how easy it is to visit the cemeteries independently rather than booking an organised tour?
I’ve seen lots of tours advertised, but most seem to involve 6–8 hours of activities, which feels a bit much for what we’re after.
Ideally, we’d love to visit a cemetery in the evening, experience the atmosphere and celebrations, and explore at our own pace while being respectful of local traditions.
Has anyone done this independently? Are there particular cemeteries you’d recommend, and is it easy enough to get there and back without a guide?
Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!
