Huayapam vs. Tlilaxtic?

I'm coming up on the end of a one-month trip to Oaxaca, and I'm excited to start the process of relocating down here! I've spent the last week looking at potential rental properties, and I've pretty much narrowed it down to a house in Huayapam and a house in Tlilaxtic. The Huayapam house came along first, and I'd pretty much made up my mind to rent that one, but since I saw the other one in Tlilaxtic on Friday, I'm torn.

I've been staying in Huayapam for the last week, and I've really been enjoying its energy - the trees, the narrow, twisty streets, the street dogs barking, the random loudspeakers, the near-constant music wafting in. In the brief time I've spent in Tlilaxtic, it just seems...more subdued, I guess? Much quieter, wide, flat streets on a grid, less energy, fewer trees, less green.

Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of being able to spend a week in Tlilaxtic now to get a better feel for the vibe before making this decision, so I thought I'd ask here - does anyone have any thoughts on this? The house in Tlilaxtic does suit my needs better than the one in Huayapam - if it didn't, this would be an easy call. I'm mainly looking for input on what living in Tlilaxtic is like, and how you think it compares to Huayapam.

Chocolate Tasting Tours

I’m planning my solo trip to Oaxaca and I’m currently in the planning excursions phase. I’m a huge foodie so I love food tours and was interested in booking a chocolate tasting tour. Are any of the TripAdvisor tours worth it? Or are there some alternatives that would be better?

Thanks!

San Gabriel Etla, Dia de Muertos Celebration

I’ve been reading that San Gabriel Etla would be an authentic experience for Dia de Muertos. So wondering if anyone knows a respectful tour operator that organizes such an event?
Also looking for transport to Zipolite and wondering how much a driver would cost? I hear the buses are sketchy?
Thanks

Is Xoxocotlàn LGBTQ+ friendly?

I’m an American student and I’m going to Oaxaca next month for a college class. I will be staying with a local (70F) in Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán. I know that we will naturally talk about our families and backgrounds, and I’m worried about my sexuality coming up (I’m a woman engaged to a woman). How open to LGBTQ+ are the people in this area? Would an elder woman be less accepting? Thank you.

Gracias!

Solo traveling Oaxaca in July. Need recs

Hey everyone, 26 M here from the USA solo traveling through Mexico. I’m planning to be in Oaxaca July 1st and don’t have a return flight booked.

Questions: -how long should I stay in Oaxaca city?

  • Is it worth going to puerto Escondido or similar beach towns with the current hot humid weather and climate conditions? If so, how long would you stay? -best cooking class recommendations
  • recommendations for cheap classes on pottery on a wheel and for hand sculpting
  • best way to meet other locals and tourists?

⚠️ SAN JOSÉ DEL PACÍFICO: TOURIST SAFETY WARNING/ADVERTENCIA PARA TURISTAS ⚠️

ESPAÑOL ABAJO ↓

For your own safety, we strongly urge tourists to avoid traveling to San José del Pacífico at this time.

I have recieved multiple reports from local residents and business owners, individuals claiming affiliation with a criminal organization have established a presence in the town. Local businesses have reportedly been subjected to extortion, transportation services such as tuk-tuks have been stopped and pressured for money, and tourists have been in the tuk tuks during these incidents.

The situation has also affected the local mushroom trade, which are currently being sold at highly inflated prices by these newcomers who are not townspeople.

If you are considering visiting San José del Pacífico, please postpone your trip until conditions improve. Your safety should come first.

If you are currently in San José del Pacífico, we encourage you not to purchase mushrooms from those benefiting from intimidation, extortion, or criminal activity.

The most effective way to support the local community is to avoid funding these operations and to wait until the town is once again safe for residents and visitors. Please share this message to help protect travelers and support the people of San José del Pacífico.

Traveling in August or January

Hey everyone,

What’s there to do around Oaxaca? My wife and I are trying to decide whether to travel to Oaxaca or somewhere else. We will be traveling to Oaxaca in either mid August or early January.

We’re both younger in our early 20s. We love hiking, sightseeing, nightlife, talking to locals, seeing different cultures, and other fun activities

What are some things you guys would recommend? Oaxaca seems like a great place but I’m struggling to see fun activities to do other than Monte Albán and Mercado 20 de Noviembre. Is there any other exciting activities we should be looking into?

We’re considering splitting our trip 4 days in Oaxaca and 4 in Puerto Escondido

Seeking advice for a guide to the Abasto in Oaxaca City

Reposting because my prior post was deleted, but I am not sure why. I am in the beginning stages of planning a return trip to Oaxaca. I want to get 1 or 2 early AM visits into the Abasto for photography. Can anyone recommend a guide that can be flexible on planning?

Solo Trip (Food and Activity Recs)

I was thinking of solo-traveling to Oaxaca around mid-December. I am looking for food and/or activity recs. For context, I am incredibly adventurous, I love mole, and I will eat anything and partake in most excursions. I love high-end tasting menus and spots off the beaten path.

I understand Oaxaca has become a bit tourist-heavy in recent years and I imagine most things are a but tourist-oriented, but I still want to have a somewhat authentic experience.

Additionally, I must ask, is Oaxaca generally safe for a younger solo female traveler?

Thank you :)

Experience traveling from Oaxaca to Huatulco

We recently travelled from Oaxaca to Huatulco, before our trip I was not able to find enough info on how to get from the city to the coast, so I wanted to share my experience.

The ADO buses go to Puerto Escondido, but from what I could tell not further south. We took Lineas Unidas for $375 pesos pp to Pochutla. From there it was a $1000 peso taxi ride to Tangolunda bay. The road was great up until Pochutla, it took about 3 hours from the city. Pochutla to Huatulco was a very uneven road with many stretches of unpaved/under construction until we reached the Huatulco airport. From there to the hotel it was fine. It was about 1 hour from Pochutla to Huatulco/Tangolunda. The LU bus was a Mercedes sprinter van which held around 15-20 people, it was very comfortable. To buy our tickets with LU we went to the station the day before and had our pick of times and seats, we were the first to reserve seats but the bus was about 80% full the next day.

We are now at a resort (Las Brisas) where we are the only non-Mexicans here. AMA if there’s anything you want to know.

Spanish language classes in Oaxaca?

Hi, I’m a middle aged adult looking to take Spanish classes during a month long stay later this year. I’m hoping some of you can recommend a school and/or share your thoughts on how to approach immersive Spanish learning in Oaxaca City.

Hotels in area just north of the Ado bus terminal

In the area just north of the Ado station, streets directly across Heroes de Chapultepec, do you consider it okay for walking around very late at night? I have found a decent looking hotel in that area, for a nice price, but want to be sure it is a wise choice over New Years Eve etc, when we would be out late.

Alternative areas are Jalatlaco, or Centro near Mercado 20 Noviembre, but the Ado north location is nicer, for the price.

Oaxaca is not a budget destination, I am sure due to travellers like me.

Thanks for your thoughts ahead of time.

Thanks to u/minware666 for their rapid repsonse.

Men's linen shirts in Oaxaca?

I'm about a third of the way through a one-month trip to Oaxaca, and I find myself needing to replace some shirts that have gotten stained. Does anyone have any recommendations for reasonably priced, quality men's clothing in Oaxaca? Ideally, I'd like to find some short-sleeved linen shirts.
