Weekly social meeting in Oaxaca — Trivia/Open Mic + Karaoke night

Hey all — running a couple of weekly bilingual language exchange meetups in Oaxaca if anyone's looking to meet people and practice Spanish/English (or whatever language you're working on) or just making friends.

🧠🎤 Trivia Night + Open Mic — Océano (Matamoros 201, Centro) 6pm social meeting 8 PM trivia, 9 PM open mic. Come solo or bring a team for trivia, then stick around for the open mic — comedy, poetry, music, whatever you've got. Good mix of locals and travelers, relaxed vibe, no pressure to be fluent in anything.

🎤🌎 Karaoke + Language Exchange — Wombat, every Thursday, 6 PM language exchange, 9 PM karaoke.

Both are free, bilingual, and open to all levels — beginners welcome. Good way to actually meet people in Oaxaca instead of just passing through.

Weekly language exchange + open mic in Oaxaca (Wednesdays, Océano)

Just wanted to share this in case anyone here is looking for something to do on a Wednesday night in Oaxaca (or wants to practice Spanish/English in a low-pressure setting).

Every Wednesday at Océano there's a language exchange starting at 6pm — it's pretty social, mixed tables of locals and visitors, good way to practice and actually meet people instead of just doing a language app alone in your room.

Around 8pm sign-ups open for an open mic that starts at 9. It's open to basically anything — songs, poems, spoken word, whatever you've got. You don't need to be a "performer," people just show up with something to share.

I help organize it, so full disclosure there, but I genuinely think it's one of the more low-key, community-feeling things happening midweek in the city. Happy to answer questions if anyone's curious about logistics, whether it's beginner-friendly, etc. also you can find events on "que onda oaxaca"

How to actually make friends in Oaxaca (not just tourist acquaintances)

After a while of knowing people but not really having friends here, I started paying attention to where genuine connections actually happen vs. where everyone just passes through.

Turns out language exchanges, the local DJ/arts scene, and a few neighborhood spots nobody writes about made all the difference. Wrote it all down here if anyone's in the same situation:

Curious if others have found different spots — what worked for you?

Now that Guelaguetza's over, here's something to do on weeknights: Open Mic night in oaxaca

So Guelaguetza wrapped up and you might be wondering what's next. Here's an idea: come to our language exchanges.

They're good if you actually want to practice Spanish or English, or if you just want to socialize, make some friends, and help other people practice while you're at it. These aren't formal classes — it's more of a relaxed environment where you end up learning through socializing, sometimes board games if people are into it.

Wednesdays at Océano we do an Open Mic where you can get whatever's inside you out through poetry, stand up, karaoke, or just words in general. Thursdays it's karaoke at Wombat.

Come alone or bring friends, honestly doesn't matter. At the end of the day there's always people who genuinely want to practice, so I end up pairing folks up depending on what they need. And don't stress if it feels quiet at first — by 9pm the open mic gets everyone loosening up and being more social anyway.

Wednesdays @ Océano, Matamoros 201, Centro — 6pm social / 9pm Open Mic
Thursdays @ Wombat, Mártires de Tacubaya 517 — 6pm social / 9pm Karaoke, free entry

If you're looking for more stuff going on in the city — events, workshops, whatever — just google "Qué Onda Oaxaca," that's where I post it all.

Hey everyone! Post-Guelaguetza blues?

Heads up: this isn't a class, I'm not a teacher, nothing structured. It's just a chill social space to meet people, chat, disconnect from the phone for a bit, and have a good time. Free, relaxed, inclusive vibe. Sometimes we throw in some board games depending on the venue. Wednesdays at Oceano Show and drinks, Thursdays wombat Café bar. Honest guide to the Oaxaca Mushroom Festival this weekend (July 31–Aug 2) not so much Bs

The Festival del Hongo is happening right now in San Mateo Río Hondo — a small Zapotec village at 2,300m in Oaxaca's Sierra Sur, about 4 hours from Oaxaca City.

What it actually is: guided mushroom ID walks with local mycologists, workshops, traditional food, community events. Not a retreat, not a rave. A village opening its forest for three days.

How to get there by public transport, what to realistically expect, the food, the hiking trail from San José del Pacífico, and an honest take on the legal gray area nobody wants to write about clearly.

🎟 $50 general | $25 estudiantes y adultos mayores

Oaxaca's Mezcal Fair is July 17–28 — here's what to know before you go

The Feria Internacional del Mezcal runs July 17–28 at the CCO (Centro Cultural y de Convenciones), Santa Lucía del Camino. $80 MXN entrance, open 11am–10pm daily.

What makes it worth going:

This isn't a curated tasting room — it's a proper regional fair with producers from across Oaxaca's 8 regions. Mezcal from communities you've never heard of, at prices that don't have the Oaxaca City markup.

The official artwork this edition is by Shinzaburo Takeda, titled Diosa del Mezcal — inspired by Yaa Nduva, the Zapotec deity of mezcal. Worth knowing for context: mezcal in Zapotec cosmology isn't just a drink, and the art reflects that. The proceeds go toward social housing programs in Oaxaca.

Live music runs daily in the mezcal pavilion and there's a separate outdoor craft beer stage if you need a break from agave spirits.

Tips:

  • Go on a weekday afternoon if you actually want to talk to producers — weekends get crowded fast
  • Bring cash for the smaller producers (card readers are unreliable)
  • The CCO is not walkable from the historic center — take a taxi or the bus on the Periférico

Stumbled onto a Guerrero family kitchen in Pueblo Nuevo — Thursday-only green pozole and something called chile relleno de atún

>Not a typical restaurant rec. Casa Barroso is a family from Chilpancingo, Guerrero that relocated to Oaxaca and cooks once a week in Pueblo Nuevo. Thursday afternoons, 3–8 PM.
The green pozole is the main event — guerrerense style, dark green broth built on toasted pumpkin seeds, tomatillo, epazote and serrano. Very different from what you'll find in the centro. Wood fire, recipe unchanged from the family in Guerrero.
What I didn't expect: the tuna-stuffed chile relleno. It sounds simple, it isn't. It's a coastal preparation specific to Guerrero's Pacific coast with no real equivalent in Oaxacan cuisine.
They already have regulars who show up every single week. That kind of loyalty in a once-a-week setup says a lot.
Álvaro Obregón 133, Pueblo Nuevo.
Full piece including the history behind Guerrero's Thursday pozole tradition (goes back to the 19th century): https://queondaoaxaca.com/blog/pozole-verde-guerrerense-casa-barroso-oaxaca?lang=en

Keeping independent culture alive: How to support a 7-year music and social project in Oaxaca

A detailed feature has just been published documenting the resilience and urgent need for support for FEMUSCAM (Festival de Música de Cámara de la Mixteca) in its 7th edition.

They provide free educational workshops (music, instrument repair, theater) to schools and children across multiple towns. However, because they are fully independent and receive no fixed funding, their survival relies strictly on community donations, volunteers, and ticket sales.

If you want to read their full story and find the active, direct channels to donate or buy concert tickets to keep this project alive, check out the article here:

If you have a Mexican phone number, you may need to take action before June 30.

Mexico now requires all mobile phone lines to be linked to an identity document. Mexican citizens must use their CURP, while foreign residents and visitors can register using a valid passport.

The process is free and only takes a few minutes, but unregistered lines could be suspended after the deadline unless authorities grant an extension.

I put together a practical guide explaining who needs to register, how to do it, what documents are accepted, and the latest news about a possible extension. https://queondaoaxaca.com/blog/registro-lineas-telefonicas-curp-obligatorio?lang=en

A New Community Cinema Is Coming to Oaxaca's Central de Abastos Area

One of Oaxaca's most overlooked and misunderstood neighborhoods is getting something few people expected:

A community cinema.

The Central de Abastos area — often known to visitors for its massive market and complicated reputation — will soon be home to a new cultural space dedicated to film screenings, photography, workshops, and community events.

The project is being developed by Comitiva Patronal de la Imagen with support from Mexico's national film institute (IMCINE), and aims to bring cinema and cultural programming directly to local families, vendors, workers, and nearby communities.

It's a reminder that some of the most important cultural projects don't happen in tourist districts — they happen where people actually live and work.

We took a closer look at the project and why many people see it as an important milestone for Oaxaca's cultural landscape.

Weekly language exchange every week, friends and games.

Regular Wednesday social if you're new or just want to meet people

Not sure how many people here are expats or long-term travelers but figured this was worth posting.

There's a weekly language exchange every Wednesday at 6pm that I've been organizing. Rotates between Aloha Bar and Wombat (fow now). It's bilingual Spanish/English but the vibe is more "game night" than language class — icebreakers, group stuff, actual conversations.

Honest take: the first 20 minutes feel slightly awkward like any social thing, and then it's fine. Met some genuinely interesting people there, both locals and foreigners. It's one of the few events in the city that regularly mixes both.

You can check que onda oaxaca for which bar it's at each week, I list it along with other events.

Free to attend, no signup needed.

Guelaguetza 2026 official prices are out — wrote a guide covering what most people don't find out until they arrive

I live in Oaxaca. Every July I watch the same thing: people show up underprepared, overpaying for taxis, scrambling for hotels, and buying tickets from the wrong places.

So I wrote the guide I wish had existed.

It covers the official ticket info, yes — but also the things that don't make the tourism brochures: how transport actually works here (hint: it's not what you'd expect), what the deal is with water in July, how to not pay tourist prices for taxis, what's actually free and how to access it, and why there's been a genuine ongoing debate for 20 years about whether the official festival serves the communities it comes from.

It's bilingual (ES/EN) and I tried to write it like a local explaining to a friend, not like a PR piece.
