4-5 Days in Yucatan, Mexico

My dad (67), my sisters (44 & 46), and myself (42) are planning a trip to Yucatan Pennisula, Mexico for Nov 18-24 (2 days for travel, 4-5 for actual vacation). I have done some preliminary research, but wanted reddit's perspective on where to go.

Flight To/From: Cancun, Mexico (Merida Airport would cause a stop somewhere)

Focus: Mayan ruins, Mexican authentic culture.

Dislikes: Resorts, beaches, heavily touristy locations

Places I found: Merida, Uxmal, Coba, TONS of Cenotes, Chocolate Museums

  1. If we pick one place to stay the whole time, where would you recommend?

  2. Would you recommend road trip travel? Ex: Stay in Merida, Uxmal, and Coba a night each.

  3. If we only have time for 1 or 2 ruins, which is a must see!

  4. Cenotes - There are SO many! How do I narrow it down? We're not big into swimming, but it sounds like it should be part of the experience.

  5. Chocolate - I want to experience. What do you recommend?

  6. Should we get a car? What is the best way to travel between cities?

Thank you for your help. There are so many choices it's overwhelming us. I really do appreciate your advice.

Passports required at the Azteca if you want alcohol???

Hi all

FIFA advise that you have to bring your passport to the stadium if you're a foreigner wanting to buy alcohol. This seems insane and very risky. Is there any workaround, like having a driver's license or a photo of your passport? What are the odds the servers even check your age?

Keen to do anything to avoid taking my passport out of my airbnb -- advice from locals or people who have been to earlier games at the Azteca would be especially appreciated!!

Rental car Cancun airport

Hi i’ m looking to rent a car for 3 weeks in August. I saw price ridiculously low on Booking but what about third party liability? I saw that you have to pay that on place when you take the car even if you already have a coverage with your credit card

San Ysidro SENTRI

My wife and I (both US Citizens) acquired Global Entry.

We are going to Mexico in October for a 5 day trip to Rosarito. We will be returning to San Diego on Monday morning to fly home. We will be crossing the border on foot.

Using the pedestrian SENTRI lane, will we save time crossing? We need to make an 11 am flight at SAN.

The bell boys demeanor changed immediately when he found out I'm taking InDrive back to the airport.

So I just returned after 5 days in Cabo San lucas. I'm no stranger to Mexico but it was my first time in Los cabos. Overall I loved it. I stayed at the Playa Grande Resort which I had mixed opinions on. Well I was checking out this morning the bell boy helped me with my luggage out of my room while I checked out. He asked me who was picking me up to take me to the airport and I told him in Drive. His demeanor completely changed with me. Playa Grande Hotel will not let rideshares like uber and in Drive pick people up at the lobby door. I had to walk out to the security gate to get picked up. I still tip the Bellboy for helping me with my luggage from my room but his attitude totally changed. He still got 50 peso tip. Oh well. 800 pesos compared to 130 US dollars( 2200+pesos) is a non-starter. I think this one example embodied everything that I had issues with with the hotel. Everything super expensive, Gringo priced, and everything quoted in dollars

Traveling to Mexico City and Oaxaca. So excited!! What do I need to know?

Hey friends!

Traveling with a music group to Mexico City and Oaxaca this summer. Very excited.

I live in LA, and Mexican culture has shaped my life and I’m so excited to see Mexico for the first time!

What are some things I should know?

I don’t really drink. I won’t be at a resort, but I also won’t be alone, I’ll be with a large group. I’m not loud, I don’t make myself a target.

Heck, I’m used to walking through LA.

What do I need to know!

How I Finally Escaped Cancun Airport Without Paying Scam Taxi Prices (If you unfortunately find yourself suddenly at Cancun Airport)

If you're an experienced Cancun traveler who always books private airport transfers in advance, you can probably skip this post.

If you're arriving at Cancun Airport and need to get to the Maya Train or simply leave the airport, this may save you a lot of stress.

Safest Way Out

Option 1 (Recommended): Take the red ADO bus.

The red ADO buses are parked directly outside the Arrivals terminal and are impossible to miss. Ride to downtown Cancun, then take Uber or another form of transportation.

Option 2: Uber from the airport.

This is what finally worked for me:

- Stay inside the terminal while requesting Uber.

- If the first driver cancels, keep trying.

- Confirm your clothing with the driver.

- Don't walk out until the driver tells you to.

- When you meet, pretend you're already friends, coworkers or family. Greet each other naturally and get into the car immediately. Don't stand beside the vehicle discussing the Uber ride.

- Verify the trip after you're inside the car.

Maya Train Shuttle

Ten days earlier, I took the official Maya Train shuttle from the train station to Cancun Airport for 35 pesos.

When I returned by air from Canada, I wanted to use the same shuttle.

I couldn't find it.

- Almost no useful signs.

- I walked from Arrivals to Departures looking for the shuttle stop I remembered.

- Because of the poor signage, I spent a long time outside the terminal before finding a small passage connecting the two areas.

- I never found the shuttle again.

- Even airport staff couldn't tell me where it was.

If you're on a schedule, don't rely on finding the shuttle after you arrive.

---

What Happened

Outside the terminal I was immediately surrounded by people selling transportation.

Many were well dressed and wore ID badges. Some even claimed to be airport employees and encouraged me to inspect their badges. They looked convincing, but none of them were allowed inside the terminal.

Everyone offered "help," but every conversation ended with them trying to sell me a taxi or telling me I'd miss my train.

When I asked about the Maya Train shuttle, I was told it didn't exist or was given obviously incorrect directions.

Taxi prices were outrageous: US$20 minimum, US$50 for a ride of only about three miles to the Maya Train station. I've also seen worse cases reported by local Facebook news pages.

When I tried to walk away from the airport, I was told I was entering a federal restricted area.

I went back inside the terminal and ordered Uber.

The first driver cancelled.

The second driver knew exactly what to do. We confirmed our clothing, she told me to stay inside until she arrived, and when we met she had me greet her like an old friend. We drove away without any problems.

I happily tipped her for her professionalism.

---

My Opinion

Don't visit Cancun. Beautiful beaches and sunshine cannot make up for the damage to your physical and mental well-being after being deceived, overcharged and constantly harassed.

On the other hand, I hope that the Mexican government can establish a separate passage between the airport and the Mayan train, physically separating tourists from the sight of scammers. I believe this would greatly improve the occupancy rate of the Mayan train and enhance tourists' positive feelings towards Mexico and Quintana Roo.

Controlled medication

Got a dry wheezing cough and recently got out of surgery can’t pay out of pocket anymore from the pharmacies. Heard it’s much cheaper and saves money . Any reliable sources ? what’s the limit on how much I can bring without facing any legal issues or raising eyebrows I’m trying to either get either oxy or hydros but prefer the cough syrup because I feel sick less after

why's nowhere has 20 Peso bill in Cabos

so this is our 2nd time in Cabos. Last time was 10 years ago

Here's the problem: I am trying to break a 100-peso bill into 20-peso bills, but nowhere has them, including the currency exchange place. I am wondering why. Are they trying to fool me?

I need some 20-peso bills so I can tip the bartenders, servers, or room staff to make things easier. Is everyone expecting us to tip at least 50 pesos now? If I am just getting a drink or two, I am not comfortable tipping 50 pesos each time

any thoughts? thank you
