Most people visit Yucatán cenotes for the water — but there’s an entire hidden ecosystem underneath

Cenotes are much more than beautiful places to swim.
Beneath the surface, they support unique cave species, freshwater ecosystems, geological formations and even archaeological remains connected to thousands of years of Yucatán history.
I found the underground wildlife especially interesting — some species have adapted to complete darkness and exist only in these environments.
What surprised you most about cenotes?

Cenote Tsukán near Chichén Itzá — a good stop after the ruins?

If you’re visiting Chichén Itzá from Mérida and want to add a cenote afterward, Tsukán is an option worth considering.
What I like about combining them is that the day feels more balanced: you can visit Chichén Itzá early in the morning, before the strongest heat and bigger crowds, and then cool down at the cenote afterward.
A few practical tips:
• Visit Chichén Itzá first and the cenote second.
• Bring swimwear, a towel and comfortable shoes.
• Keep some dry clothes in the vehicle for the return to Mérida.
• Don’t plan too many extra stops on the same day — Chichén Itzá plus a cenote is already a very good full-day experience.
• If you’re traveling with children or older family members, having private transportation makes the schedule much easier to adjust.
For travelers staying in Mérida, I usually recommend leaving early and keeping the itinerary simple rather than trying to visit four or five places in one day.
Has anyone here visited Cenote Tsukán recently? What did you think of it?

Best time to visit Uxmal from Mérida? Go early.

One of my favorite recommendations for travelers visiting Uxmal from Mérida is simple: start early.

Arriving in the morning usually means cooler temperatures, fewer crowds and a much more comfortable visit to the archaeological site.

From Mérida, the drive to Uxmal is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on traffic and your pickup location.

A good day can also include Choco-Story Museum, a regional lunch stop, or a cenote/hacienda visit on the way back to Mérida.

If you’re planning Uxmal and have questions about timing, transportation or how to organize the route, feel free to ask. Happy to share local advice.
