Hi everyone,
I’m looking to move away from paying monthly for cloud storage and build a long-term family storage solution. I’m currently paying for:
iCloud+ 6TB plan (~$30/month)
Google storage (~$10/month)
So around $40/month total.
My main goal is to replace iCloud/Google Photos as much as possible
Current use case:
Family photo/video storage
iPhone and Android automatic photo backup
Easy sharing links with family
Multiple family members accessing photos
4K phone videos
Long-term storage of memories
Possibly security camera storage in the future (Eufy)
Planned setup:
NAS:
Synology DS925+
Drives:
Thinking about starting with:
3 × 8TB NAS HDDs / possibly lower (4 or 6tb)
SHR
4th bay open for future expansion
Considering:
WD Red Plus
WD Red Pro
Seagate IronWolf Pro
The NAS will sit in my basement where we also watch TV/work, so noise matters.
Network:
Xfinity 2Gb internet
Planning wired connection to NAS
Questions:
Would you recommend WD Red Plus vs IronWolf Pro for quiet/reliable family storage?
Any major downsides moving from iCloud/Google Photos to Synology Photos that I should know?
Anything you would change before I buy?
Would you change anything in my setup?
My priority is:
Reliability > easy family experience > quiet > speed
Trying to build something I can keep for 8–10+ years.
Thanks!
