Air Quality Sensor — Unexpected Outcomes

I bought one of the Air Quality / Vape sensors to measure interior air quality (CO2, VOC, PM2.5) and had some reasonable confirmations of things I suspected, but was also surprised and have changed a few habits around the house as a result.

Background:

  • We live in a pretty dirty city, not super far from freeways. Urban 2-4 level homes and apartments with decently heavy vehicle traffic within a block distance.
  • We have A/C but no forced air or central air
  • We rent so there are some things outside our control, like mechanical ventilation.
  • I've been moving the sensor between living areas and the bedroom day/night because if it wouldn't cost me as much as my UDM, I'd probably have 4-5 of these things 😆

The exciting stuff:

  • Sleeping in our room with the door closed builds up CO2 significantly, even with the wall A/C running (it's closed loop). Most of the longer peaks visible in the CO2 graph are overnights. Overnight CO2 levels >1,000 ppm can cause fogginess, headaches, and more!
  • Cooking on the gas range also spikes the CO2, even with the hood fan on and a window open! I'd have to inspect PM1.0 and maybe VOCs further, but obviously the UP Air Quality sensor is not going to measure methane, Benzene, or CO so yeah ... watch out for that.

Nominal observations:

  • Spraying cologne or perfume spikes VOC/TVOC, understandably. VOCs also slowly climb somewhat in a warm, undisturbed room
  • An open window keeps indoor CO2 around a baseline of 475-525 ppm
  • We have ~zero vape detections because we do not vape. I'm sure hair spray or canned air duster (VOCs in that case) could maybe trick the Vape sensor if you tried.
  • Sometimes the temperature or PM2.5 will spike when the unit is power cycled. False readings as the sensors are initialized/calibrated.

Nice realizations:

  • I presume we're going to reduce the incidence rate of headaches at home now that we open a window and leave the bedroom door cracked overnight. ☺️
  • Indoor PM2.5 is really low (<2μg/m³), spiking only with heavy activity, in/out, or cleaning/dusting. Outdoor PM2.5 daily averages in our area are 50-70μg/m³. Despite multiple open windows, our Coway Airmega HEPA filters (2x in 850 SQFT) do a great job. 🙏

Best Air Purifier for Bedroom (200-250$ budget) in US

Hi All,

I am looking for the best possible Air Purifier I can get for this budget for my bedroom. I want it to be able to tackle pollen, dust and odors (nothing too bad, mostly cooking). my bedroom is roughly 150-200 sq.ft. I am not too concerned about the annual maintenance as long as I don't have to replace the filters every week or so.

Air Purifier: how close to litter box?

My litter box is in an alcove area between my kitchen and family room. It’s about 6x6’ room with high ceilings.

I want to get an air purifier but I’m wondering:

  1. Is it okay to put it across the room?

  2. Is it okay to elevate the purifier on a desk, or does it need to be on the floor next to the box?

  3. Can I get a purifier for a small room given that this area is pretty open to other rooms?

What's the best air purifier I can buy in Italy/Europe?

Hi everyone, I'm looking for recommendations for the best air purifier available in Italy/EU to use it in my bedroom.

I recently bought a traditional Japanese tatami (rush grass/igusa + pressed straw) and a raw carded cotton futon. The natural herbal aroma/VOCs and fine cotton fibers are causing my brother (who has a history of hyper reactive nasal turbinates) to wake up every morning with a blocked nose.

My bedroom is 14 m² (~3.9m × 3.5m with standard 2.7m ceiling) = ~37 m³

Whole apartment: ~80 m² = ~215 m³

My budget is 200€ but I can spend more if the price is justified. Thank you.

Best air purifier for two dogs/two cats?

US based, 1800 sq ft home, 2 dogs (one short hair one long), and 2 cats (also one short hair one long). My partner has terrible allergies to both cats and dogs (I know - but she loves them!). I’m looking to get an air purifier per floor (3). Preferably $500 or under per unit. Would also love if it had a reusable filter, but the main goal is making sure my partners allergies improve and they feel better. Thank you!!

Levoit Home Pets Hair Allergies Model- Recommendations Please!

Hey all!
Im looking to add purifiers to our bedrooms; two of the rooms are 120 sq ft while the 3rd is closer to 175 if I’m guess correctly. i have 3 kids and two indoor cats so am needing general pollution, dust, and allergen control. I need something affordable ( $100 per unit with $75 monthly for filters) but dependable and was looking at this model as its on sale- the official title is Levoit purifier for home pet hair allergies in bedroom
It’s a core 300 P and says it covers up to 1000 ft.²
I don’t know anything about purifiers outside of what I’ve read on here and a friends recommendation.
TIA!!!

Edit to add I’m in the US!

Humidifier Recommendations

Moved to CO from MN recently and am in desperate need of a humidifier. With thousands of options online - wanted to see if anyone had any good recommendations for Colorado weather. Ideally ones that won’t cause mold issues.

Winix D360 is garbage; major flaw allows dust/allergens past the filter media

I have a severe dust mite allergy and I rent a basement bedroom in a large house. Dust (just in general) ends up settling down here due to the floor plan; the flooring is "fake hardwood", so it's easy to mop, but my bedroom is "L"-shaped and dust accumulates at the far end, where my bed is. Mopping works, but the dust settles too fast for me to keep up with via mopping alone. So, I bought a Winix D360 from Home Depot a little over a year ago to help with both the dust mites and the "regular" dust problem.

The air purifier only seems to help after I change the filters, and my allergies start coming back again after about 3 weeks. I'm already doing everything I can in terms of medications and cleaning habits, so that's definitely not the problem. I decided to open up the air purifier and take it apart in case any dust, etc. had gotten behind the filter media.

Lo and behold, there are multiple points through which air is free to flow around the filter media. Past the filter media basket, the enclosure for the fan/motor assembly lacks any kind of gasket or other rubber/silicone material to form a seal against the back wall of the unit. The plastic is cut to fit inside the chassis and against the other parts, but it's plainly visible to the naked eye that this doesn't constitute the kind of seal necessary to ensure that the air is forced to flow through the filter media. I didn't take a photo of the fan/motor assembly, but rest assured, there's nothing stopping dust, etc. picked up by the carbon filter from getting all the way back to the fan and back into the air in the room.

I live on the west coast on the United States. If someone else here (especially somebody with a dust mite allergy) could recommend an air purifier with a higher build quality and some kind of gasket/other seal to keep allergens contained, I'd really appreciate it.

How to reduce urine smell from main living area?

Source cannot be reasoned with so I'm just holding my breath whenever I have to leave my room. Mobile home. Main concern is the living and kitchen areas. In the evening it's OK as it cools down enough to open windows, but it still smells. During the day it's too hot. Budget is maybe $1-500? I don't really know a lot about air fresheners and stuff outside of basic tower and box fans for cooling.

country: usa

edit: she hasn't peed the carpet but she's peed her pyjamas several times and she refuses to wash them and everything is a fight with her, so she reeks up the area just by being in there.

Best air purifier for 1,000sf apt in Boston, MA -- primarily concerned about busy 4-lane street outside, particulate matter

I just moved to a new apartment building on the third floor with windows all facing a busy 4-lane street. I am the type that usually loves to keep my windows open, and am concerned about doing so next to such busy street with all the particulate matter being kicked up. It is just me and my partner living here, both relatively healthy adults, but I want to make sure my body lasts me a long time!

I am researching what air purifier would be best for this situation? The apartment is small, about 800 sf across two main rooms separated by a door, with ~8' ceilings. The bedroom is carpeted.

So far, I have looked into Coway, Winix and Blueair. The blueair medium spi3 is the strongest candidate that I've looked at, but of course there's been lots of conflicting opinions and information on what's best. Please let me know if you have tips or recommendations for this situation!

Additionally, noise levels aren't a huge concern -- the busy street is noisy so I welcome some white noise to cancel it out. Budget is flexible, willing to splurge a bit for quality filtration, ideally <$500 with <$50 per year for filters, etc.

Asbestos and HEPA filter

I’m trying to understand a specific asbestos/HEPA-filter scenario and would appreciate input from people familiar with filtration or asbestos exposure. I used a Levoit Core 400S for roughly two months after it had previously been used in an renovation environment where asbestos-containing material have been disturbed. (didn't know at that moment about content)

My concern is that if asbestos fibers were captured by the filter, could some of those fibers later detach or become re-entrained during normal operation, changes in airflow, low-level vibration, or handling of the purifier? I’ve come across studies reporting re-entrainment from loaded HEPA filters, but the experimental conditions seem to vary considerably.

I’m particularly interested in whether those studies are realistically applicable to a household HEPA purifier operating under normal conditions, and whether fibers that were previously trapped in the filter could realistically produce a meaningful airborne concentration in the room, and if so, what levels could be?

Budget Air Purifier for a Bedroom (one bathroom/one closet)

I'm in USA. The bedroom itself has a floor plan of 15ft 5in (length), 16ft 3in (width), and the ceiling height can go to 9ft 7in. Don't really have much money to throw around, but the house gets a lot of dust and I'd like to fight off some of it with a purifier while wiping down surfaces. What are my options?

Mila air sensor accuracy issues? Should I switch?

We have had Mila air since 2020, we were attracted to it because of the sensor suit and how you could chose the filter that worked best for you.

Our first unit needed replaced almost immediately because the AQI would not move even with a candle burning right next to it. They did replace it under the warranty pretty easily. This unit lasted a couple years and then one day it shut itself off and would mot come back on. At this point I was out of warranty but due to be subscribed to the filter replacement service they offered to replace it if I sent the defective one back and paid 100 bucks which I did. Now a couple years later I just started having this issue where my AQI spikes and crashes like a roller coaster all day long but the falls and stays at zero all night. The unit is in the same place it has always been in with no new humidifier or anything like that so these spikes just don’t make sense. Not to mention they just started a few weeks ago (right after my last filter change) and do not happen once so ever during the night time hours.

i have always know Mila’s temperature and humidity readout to be incorrect but I just live with it as i have a separate thermometer in the room. I’m just wondering has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone have ideas as to what it could be? Or does anyone have a unit they suggest that would replace the Mila with similar data feed back.

Is there any benefit to having an air purifier if I have a MERV 16 furnace filter with uv-c light ?

Before anyone gets excited, yes my furnace was designed for a MERV 16. It’s a Lennox high efficiency system with their PureAir system that has a MERV16 filter and uv-c light I get good air flow through it and haven’t destroyed any blower motors.

It did very well recently when we had those Canadian wildfires. I’m in Chicago and didn’t smell anything inside.

Is the latest HouseFresh the best "which purifier, start here" video... ever?

... and not just because he name-drops the subreddit. 😉

Their new video is well-organized, hits the important points and common recommendations, and isn't too long. No small feat.

IMO if you could only send one link to help someone (especially a 'normie') buy a purifier, this would be the link. Watching it I almost felt like, "I can't compete, Danny did it best" 😂

I don't know if it's possible or benefiting to have a "Start Here First" sticky for common buying scenarios, but if so this video would be a strong candidate. Unfortunately it seems many people skip the wiki, and maybe having a video alternative is helpful for some folks.

Don’t want my new house to smell!

Im going cross-eyed researching air purifier, help!

Im in NW Florida. Open concept living/dining/kitchen. 640 sq ft. Three cats that used to be outdoor, now indoor with litter boxs since we just moved. I’m looking for a system that will keep house from smelling like cats, odors from smoke when husband is clearing/burning outside and comes in stinking like smoke, help with asthma/allergies AND a long lasting/affordable filter. I understand I need a good carbon filter. I’d like to keep it around $200 if possible. I’m considering the following so far… Coway Airmega Mighty, Winix 5510, Levoit Vital200s. I have a Levoit Core mini-P in my laundry room and it really helps with litter box and laundry odors. Thanks for your advice

Did I make a mistake in buying this?

So I have severe allergies where I’m congested daily and I thought, enough is enough. I’ve been wanting to buy an air purifier forever and found this one on Target for $60. Now it’s arrived, set up was easy, there’s nothing wrong with it but I kind of feel buyer’s remorse because I’m unemployed and $60 feels like a big expense. Furthermore I had no idea filter replacement were so expensive, and I am not willing to keep up with that to be honest, it’s a bit extreme. I think I bought this on an impulse because I had a bad allergy flare up day and was desperate to try anything. Also I have a fluffy cat and cats were listed as an allergy for me.

The point of this post is, is this air purifier model worth the money and will it improve my allergies significantly? Or should I just return it? I put it right next to my bedside & my bedroom is quite small.

The other thing that’s making me have buyer’s remorse is my dad said it’s too expensive and he can find something similar at Goodwill.
