Communities call to stop fast track development on sensitive land in NZ

Communities call to stop fast track development on sensitive land in NZ

- Parliament Petition Link
Country wide, communities are uniting to call for the House of Representatives to terminate Fast-Track developments that are outside local and district plans. Fast track is being used as a bypass across New Zealand for housing developers to push housing into out of zone land, in some cases land zoned as such to prevent destruction of environmentally sensitive land, including wetlands, rivers and waterways, floodplains, coastal and estuarine environments, and habitats of threatened and endangered species. Many of these areas were never intended for large-scale development and are protected for good reason.

Land can be purchased at a lower price because its zoning restricts development, then Fast Track is used to bypass those restrictions and enable large-scale housing, creating far greater profits margins than developing land that is already appropriately zoned. Don’t be fooled by the developer spin that this is simply about getting consents faster.

Please share with family and friends to help us fight this!!

Fast-Track development threatens endangered bird

Housing developers proposal to Fast Track the development of an ecologically significant peninsula in Matakana. The proposed development of the land will threaten the habitats of multiple species, including habitat of high extinction risk, Australasian Bittern (in the bird of the year), long tail bats and numerous skink/ Gecko populations.

RNZ article on one of NZ most endangered birds Bittern, that is threatened by Matakana fast track

From Protect Matakana post:

“The developers own ecological assessment identifies the potential for unavoidable loss of wetland habitat, along with potential impacts on watercourses and native wildlife.

Despite this, the development is being promoted with claims of environmental benefits through planting and wetland restoration.

Claims of future planting cannot justify the loss of ecological value in existing, established habitats. Do they expect us to believe these claims when their own research appears to tell a very different story? “

Matakana fast track submission

Another fast track development has been submitted for the small rural town of Matakana, Auckland, by Sanderson Group. The retirement development would be on 73 hectares of low lying, flood prone, productive farm land. The property is a costal peninsula with Matakana river running east and west. Under the AUP the property is zoned rural/rural costal.

The sprawl is getting further and the urbanisation of rural areas continues. This will double the population of a town that doesn’t have the infrastructure to handle it.

Matakana country club council report

Council comments opposing the development:

“the proposal remains inconsistent with the Auckland Regional Policy Statement, which seeks to protect the productive potential of these finite soil resources from inappropriate urbanisation"

“The proposed density is roughly 150 times the anticipated dwelling density for this zone (1 dwelling per 50ha)."

"regional benefits asserted within the referral material appear to be overstated and not demonstrated".
