People of auckland. What is the meaning of life?

As i stay awake. 1am on a friday morning. Drinking sleeping tea to help me sleep before work tomorrow at 9am.

I ask my self. What am I doing with life. We are all basically spinning on a rock in space, mean while I'm worried about a PowerPoint presentation and excel.

People born, people die. The sun and moon rises. The ones we bring into this world are the ones we bury or bury us. Makes you really think. What are we all here to do.

Made me dissasociate and not think about rent, bills, $15 block of cheese & be more present and greatful that I'm breathing to experience the struggle of life. One day it wont matter.

Anyways. Any one know the answer? Meaning of life. Atleast to you.

Private schools like Kristin, over hyped? Or actually worth it?

Everyone talks about them and how it's difficult to get in, even needing interveiws (of parents) I grew up in a public school (in waitakere) and thought that was fine and things worked out, but now that I have kids and have options, something I've been thinking about, any one with first hand experience at the school?

Does anyone even care?

I know this is a divisive topic, but can someone explain why more people aren’t talking about the growing wealth gap in this country?

I was reading an article about wealthy Australians moving here because New Zealand is becoming a bit of a tax haven for them. It just made me wonder — are people oblivious to what’s happening, do they not care, or have they simply given up trying to think about it?

This isn’t me trying to be some stereotypical “lefty” either. What people don’t realise is that if the gap keeps growing at this rate, eventually even the middle class will get crushed. History shows that when too much wealth and power ends up concentrated in a very small group of people, the rest of society starts falling apart.

Healthcare gets worse, housing becomes unaffordable, poverty rises, younger generations lose hope, and ordinary people end up competing harder and harder just to survive.

I honestly think this is the elephant in the room in New Zealand politics. Governments keep talking about growth, but growth for who? Because for a lot of average Kiwis it feels like life is getting harder despite working just as hard, if not harder, than previous generations.

I’m not saying there needs to be some literal revolution, but I do think New Zealanders have become too passive about where the country is heading. At some point we need serious conversations about housing, tax, wages, infrastructure, healthcare, and long-term planning instead of constantly kicking problems down the road.

Otherwise NZ risks becoming a country where only the wealthy truly thrive while everyone else slowly falls behind.

My Honest Experience with ADHD Simple NZ (Affordable ADHD Diagnosis + Shorter Wait Times)

Edit: Im very surprised to get more comments of me being a bot and lots of wary comments which is fair from other subreddits, my post did come of too advertising. I’ll delete my post tmr because it feels like im doing more damage than it should be but I still want people who are in my situation before to see this and consider it:)). I only just wanted to help

Hellooo I (F20) just wanted to share this because I have been finding people asking about ADHD simple and I WISH I had someone to talk to who had experience with them. I’m offering this to be the person that I needed for anyone who needs help!I’m genuinely so grateful I found ADHD Simple. This is NOT an ad and I’m not endorsed by them at all — I just wanted to spread awareness because they helped me so much and I know there are probably other people struggling the same way I was.

Not only was the process much faster compared to other clinics, but the monthly payment option made getting diagnosed actually possible for me. Because of my ADHD, saving up $2k+ upfront for other providers felt impossible, especially combined with the insanely long waitlists. Every clinic I looked into felt either financially unreachable or had wait times that made me want to give up.

Finding ADHD Simple honestly felt too good to be true at first 😭 I genuinely thought it was a scam website because I couldn’t believe something affordable with short wait times actually existed in NZ. I ended up researching the company heavily, looking into their psychiatrists and clinicians, stalking LinkedIns, reading experiences, etc. Safe to say they’re real LOL.

When I finally booked my appointment, I literally cried from relief. Then cried again after getting diagnosed.

I had Kirsty as my clinician and she was amazing. She made me feel comfortable, understood, and less nervous throughout the process. She’s funny too which honestly helped a lot.

For anyone curious, the process for me went something like this:
• Option to do their free ADHD test/screener
• Choose service (diagnosis assessment OR medication titration if already formally diagnosed)
• Choose payment method/payment plan
• Fill out forms (NHI, GP details, etc.)
• You’ll need 2 people who know you well:
1 person who knew you before age 12

1 close person currently (friend/partner/etc.)

Unfortunately my parents don’t believe in ADHD, so I asked if my best friend who knew me since age 11 would count, and they said yes.

After that:
• Wait for assessment day (telehealth/video call)
• You talk to a trained ADHD NP or GP about childhood, school, work, relationships, symptoms, functioning, family history, etc.
• They discuss what they think, but the psychiatrist still reviews everything afterward before final diagnosis
• Wait around 1–2 weeks for report/results
• Decide whether to continue medication management with ADHD Simple or your own GP (if your GP is confident/certified to prescribe ADHD meds)

If doing titration with them, you’ll also need blood pressure monitoring. You can either get it checked elsewhere or buy a monitor yourself.

One thing I’ll mention:
The assessment can sometimes feel a bit rushed, BUT I think that’s because a lot of us with ADHD have YEARS of thoughts, experiences, symptoms, trauma, masking, and concerns built up that we want to explain all at once.

My BIGGEST tip:
WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN BEFOREHAND.
Seriously. Brain dump EVERYTHING:
• symptoms
• childhood behaviours
• school struggles
• work issues
• emotional regulation
• memory issues
• sensory issues
• relationship struggles
• examples/examples/examples
I personally spent almost a whole day staring at just 3 headings because my brain was so overwhelmed trying to organise everything. Using ChatGPT or Claude to help organise my thoughts honestly helped a ton.

Another tip:
If you’re confused or anxious during the waiting period, EMAIL OR CALL THEM. The ADHD Simple team was genuinely kind every time I contacted them. I spam emailed/called them so many times because random questions kept popping into my brain and they were always patient with me 😭
I’m starting titration next week, and I’ll probably update this post afterward with how it goes + any advice/tips that might help others.

Thank you ADHD Simple team for all your hard work ♥️

And if anyone has questions about the process, I’m more than happy to help based on my experience.

Hidden pieaces of history in everyday Auckland.

The street is being repaved tonight, so no sleep.

What are some cool little known pieces of history in Auckland? Like the three Portage roads in Auckland that Maori once dragged waka from the Waitimata to Manukau harbours. Or the Manukau heads gun emplacement that has fallen into the sea. Or the Onehunga block house in Jellico Park, built in 1860 to watch out for incoming waka from the harbour.

What is out there for our elderly?

Kia ora. Title is pretty much self explanatory but for some context, my grandmother is looking for some kind of community in Auckland with people her own age but I am struggling to find something for her.

Last November our grandfather passed away. She is going through grief counselling but she has expressed how she needs some purpose in life again and I just really feel for her. She's alone and unfortunately not a lot of us are in Auckland to keep her company.

So what's out there? There's an abundance of groups/activities for our youth but I can't seem to find anything for our elderly who are alone and need to keep their brains and bodies active. Are there FB groups I can join and enquire?

She goes to the library, walks, she is an ex chef, she really does her best but she's bored. There's got to be somewhere with people in her age range (70s) that she can become a part of. I was thinking maybe she can knit for SCBU babies (although a hospital might be triggering for her) just anything really. Please help. She deserves to have some joy in her life and I'd love to see that smile of hers again.

Am I driving wrong? Coasting to a stop vs. last-second hard braking

Hey everyone, genuine question about driving habits here in Auckland.

Say you're on a side street coming up to a give-way or stop sign at a main road. There are no cars ahead of you.

My approach: I take my foot off the accelerator early, coast, and do a slow, mild brake to a smooth stop.

What I see everyone else doing: Maintaining 50km/h right up until the intersection and braking hard at the very last second.

I’ve been noticing this last-second braking happening more and more lately across the city.

I’ve always done the first method because it saves wear and tear on my brake pads and saves a bit of fuel. But honestly, my main reason is predictability.

When I’m driving on a main road and I see a car barreling toward the intersection from a side street without slowing down, it scares the hell out of me. It looks like they aren't paying attention and are about to T-bone me. Easing off the gas early changes your car's "body language" and clearly tells the cross-traffic, “I see the intersection and I am stopping.”

Seeing how incredibly common this aggressive late-braking method has become is making me second-guess myself. Am I the weird one for coasting? Isn't slow deceleration exactly what we were all taught to do when learning to drive?

Curious to hear if anyone else has noticed this getting worse out there, or if I'm just overthinking it.

Where do the software development types tend to co-work in auckland?

I’m in a coworking space but finding the people here seem to be more construction management, marketing and accounting types. Is there somewhere that entrepreneurial software development types tend to cluster at?

The townhouse turgor is becoming limp in our suburbs, parking on berms makes boomers cry, will apartments with sensible off street parking rise to fill suburban skies?

Off street parking is a problem for town houses in suburbs as you only have one level to deal with, so cars spill into the streets.

Why not build apartments in suburbs instead - with parking and storage space, EV enabled, on the ground floor or basement level? Wouldn't that make more sense?

Instead of taking out entire streets with townhouses, you could have hotspots of density. Should our planning rules be more realistic about parking provision?

Given the new harbour crossing won't be rail enabled and the govt is dragging it's feet on PT investment - it seems our planning system is based on hope for a PT enabled future that just isn't coming?

We either need to enable PT or we need to intensify for a car based future. I don't know.

Smart homeless guy F’s around and finds out trying to hassle a jiujitsu gym in CBD.

Tukaha on Union St. produces a good chunk of NZ’s black belts. Jahred (guy on top), is one of if not NZ’s best competitor.

caption:

Cracktivities
We had a... less than welcome guest... at the gym this evening. After asking old mate kindly to leave and kindly showing him the door, he decided he didn't want to leave without trying some jiu jitsu.
A body lock & mat return to mount is a good restraint system.

After a bit of control with Jono and I on him, I asked his name and if he was relaxed enough to leave of his own accord, he said he was but the throat gouging told me otherwise. So back mount with double arm trap it is until the police arrived to provide VIP transport.

No punches thrown, no one hurt.
Just a reminder that jiu jitsu works.

Mysterious Nightly Orb Lights Over Auckland – 10 Days of activity!

Hey Aucklanders. What is going on over Auckland the the moment?

We have been seeing these strange orb's of light over west Auckland for the past 10 days. Were not claiming they are UFO's/Aliens just surprised nobody else has posted about them due to their strange characters. We’d love other Aucklanders to have a look and share what they observe, so we can better understand what these lights might be. Personally been looking up my whole live and never seen anything like it. This video is one of dozens we have taken during this time. Below is the data we have gathered over the past 10 days

https://youtu.be/y99zreP13Hg?si=zG4QSS3OcOXqXUjI

https://preview.redd.it/duknk2je9e2h1.jpg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a205ebc5dbad90567a51da385595fbd103be265

-Observed every night for at least ten days.
-Filmed on clear, cloudless nights.
-Typically appears between 7:50 and 8:40 pm.
-Seen in the same patch of sky toward West Auckland, possibly out far over the sea.
-Filmed from Somerville looking east, and also from Point View Reserve, confirming high altitude. Above the helipad
-Lights appear mid-sky and move in any direction, but not downward.
-They can streak, flare brighter, then vanish suddenly.
-Helicopters entering the area often coincide with the orbs disappearing, then reappearing later.
-Often three to five appear at once and move in different directions

We’re not claiming these are aliens or definitive UFOs. They just don’t match the usual behavior of satellites, drones, helicopters, or airplanes

Before you reply Planes, drones OR satellites, please try check them out for yourself

Here is the direction we see them. Viewed mostly from Somerville (east Auckland) and also from height at point view reserve
