Queer Summer NYC novels from the 60s–80s

Hi! I’m 21F and looking for recommendations for novels set in NYC during (or before) the AIDS epidemic — especially anything centered around the arts scene, queer/gay culture, nightlife, downtown characters, etc. I’m much more interested in older books than contemporary ones.

I’d also really love recommendations that aren’t just the super obvious household-name picks. I’m trying to build a really good summer reading list.

I just finished Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe and loved the lesbian leads, ensemble cast, sense of place, and pre-digital atmosphere. So I’d also love any recommendations with a similar feeling — queer women, strong sense of community, artsy/bohemian environments, older settings, etc. Doesn’t have to be set in the South.

Anything you’ve personally loved would be appreciated!
