Looking for POC, general fiction, not YA, not fantasy, that deals with serious issues.

Hello all! I find that a lot of queer books tend to be more on the happy slice-of-life end of things when they’re not fantasy or something other than just normal, adult, contemporary fiction. I want something that has to do with overcoming hardship in real life scenarios like growing up poor in a neighborhood with high gang violence or living in a country where it is dangerous to be queer. Or something set during race riots or governments falling apart. Or living during a time where it is more dangerous to be queer than it is today in some countries. I am mainly looking for a male perspective but I’m not strict on that and I would love trans perspective but again mainly looking for male in that too. Thanks y’all!

Looking for MM books with grumpy x sunshine+double awakening+ super slow burn

I read a Wattpad story a while ago and now I’m looking for books with a similar vibe.

Two seemingly straight guys meet through their girlfriends one is cold, grumpy, emotionally unavailable, and sleeps around, while the other is a sweet golden retriever type. They slowly become friends, but things change after an impulsive kiss, leading to a super slow-burn,secret romance full of yearning, repression, angst, and messy feelings.

I’d love to know some lgbtq+ comics to read, a comic is a Non-binary character would be amazing.

Thank you.

Fantasy or Sci fi Books with a Gay guy as the MC

Honestly not really a big reader, but there isn’t much of this on TV, so I want to get put onto some books.

A perfect romance isn’t necessary, although good romance is a plus, I just want a good ole Fantasy story with Action.

Body type diversity would be a plus, but not a must, I think that’s all.

June New Books: What’s in your TBR?

Setting aside some deep seated opinions about how we should have this many books released all year round and not just “pride month”, June is genuinely stacked and I’m choosing joy over violence!

Six books I’m excited for

The Open Era by Edward Schmit (June 2)
Gay tennis sports romance taking place at the Grand Slam with mental health rep and, my favourite part, an already out player. Not your typical “being found out” gay sports narrative.

Waist Deep by Linea Maja Ernst (June 9)
Danish translation that was a bestseller in Denmark in 2024 and is finally here. Five friends, a lakehouse, midsummer, bad decisions. The trans character Quince is apparently already beloved in Danish literary circles. One of those books that feels like it’s going to have a moment.

Let’s Not Go Overboard Here by Erica Hendry (June 2)
Bisexual Jewish protagonist solves a murder at a destination wedding in the Greek Islands using her encyclopedic knowledge of reality TV. I don’t know what else you need from a book.

Transcendent by Laverne Cox (June 9)
She waited until she had the emotional steadiness to tell the whole truth, and the timing of this landing in June 2026 specifically is not lost on me.

The Disco at the End of the World by Nathan Tavares (June 2)
Alternate 1977, a moon base, lost love, LA discos, and a country sliding toward fascism. Queer found family as an act of resistance. This is the one I’m most excited about.

Pure Men by Mohamed Mbougar Sarr (June 2)
The Goncourt Prize winner getting its first English translation. A French literature professor in Dakar investigates the exhumation of a man condemned for being gay. Literary fiction that actually earns the weight it’s carrying.

Full list with everything releasing this month is https://queerbookclub.org/lists/lgbtq-books-june-2026-pride-month/ if you want the whole picture. What are you picking up?

Books focused on qpr/platonic love

I know there are a lot of books that feature strong friendships and found family dynamics. What I'm specifically looking for though, are books that focus on the development of platonic relationships between characters. Basically, something similar to a slow burn romance, except focused on platonic/qpr relationships.

Thank you in advance

Queer Summer NYC novels from the 60s–80s

Hi! I’m 21F and looking for recommendations for novels set in NYC during (or before) the AIDS epidemic — especially anything centered around the arts scene, queer/gay culture, nightlife, downtown characters, etc. I’m much more interested in older books than contemporary ones.

I’d also really love recommendations that aren’t just the super obvious household-name picks. I’m trying to build a really good summer reading list.

I just finished Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe and loved the lesbian leads, ensemble cast, sense of place, and pre-digital atmosphere. So I’d also love any recommendations with a similar feeling — queer women, strong sense of community, artsy/bohemian environments, older settings, etc. Doesn’t have to be set in the South.

Anything you’ve personally loved would be appreciated!

Couples in Game Changers by Rachel Ried had the same foundation (in a bad way) ?

OK first, no hate to the series. I genuinely enjoyed reading the books. They were fun reads with great romance.

But as I continued through the series, I started to realise they were all just same idea in different fonts? And the only couple that slightly went off script was Troy and Harris. And of course sequels like "The Long Game" don't count because the couple is already established.

So basically the whole foundation of the romance is:

Hockey player meets normal dude (or another hockey player) . Hockey player can't come out cause the League is homophobic. They have sex with no strings attached. They keep having sex but eventually start liking each other. And they go back and forth with the sex before confessing to each other.

And like I said, Troy and Harris are a bit different 'cause there is a mutual emotional attraction between them before they go to town.

And I know I sound like a backward, conventional whatever whatever it is. But I wish more of them had romance and emotion or atleast something other than sexual attraction before the smut. I know the main point of sex is physical attraction. But in Game Changers, it all starts as a strictly sexual encounter.

I'll break it down what happened in each book, that I've read, before the guys start to boing boing

  1. Game Changer : They just find each other hot

  2. Heated Rivalry : They find each other hot and want to hookup without the risk of being outed

  3. Tough Guy : There is SOME emotion involved cus they had crushes on each other in high school. But Fabian is helping Ryan to explore gay sex. No strings attached.

  4. Common Goal : Kyle is helping Eric to explore gay sex. No strings attached.

  5. Role Model : Mutual emotional attraction before smut begins

Do yall see a pattern? Or am I trippin'? 'Cause I feel like the book was too eager to do the deed. I know it's a trope or whatever but does every book has to be like that? (Except Role Model ofc) I would love to read more mlm books from Rachel Ried, with different dynamics. She's genuinely good at writing romance.

I guess I just don't find the uncertain period of "just sex" appealing... Maybe it's a culture thing? (I'm Asian)

Also, pls don't hate me for this but, I feel like the books are trying to highlight smut because people like to read smut. Idk how to explain it. Like they know people would buy it if there was smut involved so they take every possible opportunity to include a smut scene? Or am I the problem? But not in a way that ruins the story tho (thank god)

Again, no hate because I loved the books. (Can't wait for Unrivaled to come outtttt.)

Chasing a vibe

Last summer I read 4 books that I think really define a section of my taste in books. I am searching for another sapphic book that would fit in. They're all different genres, I think what they have in common is being stylized, experimental, heavy on the vibes. They feel quite ethereal to me. Anyway, the books are:

- Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield (literary horror)

- This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone (sci-fi romance)

- In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado (stylized memoir)

- I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman (dystopian - not sapphic but part of this vibe I'm going for)

Just for reference, I've read Julia Armfield's other books, Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado, and The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar.

Sorry if this is too vague I just have something so particular that I'm in the mood for and don't know where to begin! Thanks in advance!

Looking for recs: Queer young adult book(s) about witches with female protagonist(s).

Hey guys! Been thinking about posting here for a while looking for recs and finally built up the courage!

Unfortunately, I’m not a skilled reader. I don’t know if it’s because I’m just a bit slow, or because of my untreated (working on it) adhd, but I can only finish young adult novels. Even though I’m 35. Idk. I tried reading “A Day of Fallen Night” and was really enjoying the story but I haven’t been able to finish it and it’s been years. Once I accepted my limitations and stuck to young adult fiction I’ve been able to rediscover my love of reading and have been enjoying myself a lot.

So, like the title says, I was wondering if anyone here has any recommendations for queer YA fiction about witches, with a female protagonist.

For example, I’ve really been enjoying the “Hedgewitch” series, but it’s not GAY ENOUGH

I’m not after steamy stories, but if there are steamy scenes idc (as long as the characters aren’t too young because that would make me feel creepy af cuz I’m OLD YA’LL)

The stories don’t have to be ABOUT young people, I just need it written for young people because of my infuriatingly-slow/yet-sometimes-too-fast/easily-distracted/unable-to-maintain-concentration brain.

I think I’ve started to repeat myself so I’ll leave it there. If you read this far thank you very much!

QUEER MISTERY NOVELS (FEMALE PROTAGONIST PREFFERED)

Hi, I'm looking for a queer mistery novel, open to anyhthing but specifically lesbians. I've read and quite enjoyed the Pentecost and Parker series specifically. I tend to prefer female protagonists, I tend to avoid cop or FBI main charactars, and I tend to prefer historical elements. I like complicated misteries but I've also read my fair share of cozy misteries (The Vera Wong series comes to mind). Bipoc series are encouraged since I'm trying to read more of those.

MM books recs that aren't enemies to lovers, preferably fantasy but any is fine

It can be enemies to lovers if its actually enemies to lovers not just the love interest being an arrogant rude guy and the mc just doesn't put up with his bs. Nothing wrong with enemies to lovers just irl im kinda the prideful arrogant guy type and i don't see myself taking that behavior from someone. Also kinda ok with the mc being the rude one cause I've never seen that before its usually the love interest who is "cold arrogant confident attractive" who is bad to everyone but has "soft spot" for mc. also its totally fine again if u like this trope just like I said not as relatable or enjoyable for me cause of my experiences. thank u!

MM romance with chefs?

Hi pals,

I am watching Top chef (french equivalent to Master chef) and I was wondering... Wouldn't it be great to have a MM romance in that kind of setting, or just with cooks and chefs. I have never seen that before.

Does anyone have any recommendations? (Bonus if it's in french)

Historical fiction with LGBT

I'm looking for story (book, series) similar to Mary Renault. I love her Alexander the Great series. But I read almost everything from her.

Only one work came to close was Thousand Autumns by Meng Xi Shi.

I also read Madeline Miller - Circa, Song of Achilles

What I'm looking for: love theme, historical fiction with research and isn't only background for story, philosophical overtones, questions of morality, ethics, historical realism even with ugly parts, queer theme. Especially historical realism. I don't like when characters and story feels like author want to wrote it for modern sensitive audience.

Can be also more literary fantasy.

Thank you

Looking for a good read!

I’m looking for a good gay romance novel. I want something with a lot of sex, but I also want it be romantic and have a good storyline. Most of the MM novels I’ve ready have been nothing much smut and no real plot or story just porn on paper.
