The Nextdoor energy on this sub is embarrassing and dangerous

Every time I come on here, it’s the same story: someone saw a dog or a poop bag, heard a noise, had a mildly annoying interaction, and half the comments are like “call the precinct.”

Like… what are we doing?

This is Greenpoint, not an HOA. People live here. Dogs bark. People are weird. Neighbors are annoying. That’s city life. Not every small thing needs to become a police matter.

And the “just call the NYPD” instinct is not harmless. You’re taking what’s typically minor neighborhood friction and inviting an armed police encounter into it. That is a real escalation, especially for people who don’t get treated gently when the cops show up. Some people get a slap on the wrist. Other people get misidentified, arrested, or worse.

If there’s a problem talk to the person. Call 311 if it’s actually something the city needs to handle. Or just be annoyed and move on like everyone else. Otherwise, if there’s a reasonable threat beyond a quality of life issue then maybe it’s ok to call the cops.

But this constant cop-calling, hall-monitor, Karen energy is embarrassing and frankly dangerous. It makes the sub feel like a microcosm of the worst exclusionary, gentrified version of the neighborhood.
