Build suggestion for companion Fane in lone wolf duo run

I'm on my 2nd playthrough, classic difficulty, wanting to experience new companion storylines. I went for lone wolf duo and picked Sebille and made her finesse archer build. I picked Fane and started off as melee fighter but quickly changed to summoner. Currently at level 10 in early act2. Going for physical damage build.

On one hand I'm quite happy with the run. Something clicked between my first playthrough and this one. Focusing on one damage type really helped. Archer with Sebille feels so OP at least so far. Flesh sacrifice allows dipping for blood arrows (which I think most enemies are not strong against?), plus executioner talent, and adrenaline, means I usually kill at least one dangerous mage/archer enemy on first round. I even fought off the Love Has A Price ambush by pyramid-teleporting Fane into the bedroom (pleased with myself for trying this without looking up guide), having Sebille chameleon cloak and spend a turn equipping gear, before Sebille killed everyone involved including the lizard, plus the dwarf who appeared downstairs trying to apologise. (Lohar is next, filthy thieves).

On the other hand I don't think I'm getting most out of Fane. I got his summoning maxed now, and he opens with the summoning and the 2 basic infusions, then I mainly use his knockdown skills like battlestomp. Incarnate focuses on physical damage like whirlwind, ranged attack and the charge attack foe knockdowns. But I find Fane is relatively squishy (2handed weapon, no shield).

I'm after any suggestions for a Fane build to complement my Sebille. Should I stick with summoning (now maxed) and still do melee, spec into necromancy for tankiness, get a shield (I've read they aren't good? But my mage/summoner in first playthrough did well with wand/shield combo), or ditch summoning and go full 2hand melee?
