BSWD/CSG-DSE Gatekeeping @ YorkU
Is it just me, or do Accessibility Counsellors love gatekeeping funding?
I need an important assistive device. Last semester, I bought my own accommodation supplies to avoid the drama, but everything is sooooo expensive right now, and the budget is super tight. So I reached out to the counsellor about the BSWD bursary. It feels like she is finding so many innovative ways to say NO, even suggesting I use some random free software that doesn't even accommodate the specific limitation I need the device for. The overtime she is putting in to find a fancy, bureaucratic way to say NO is insane. Even though the device is eligible under BSWD and my doctor recommended it, my counsellor acts like the money is coming from her personal bank account. It's almost like a shaming ritual, "Oh, you got a disability, let me see you jump through this hoop."
Has anyone else dealt with this with their counsellor?
