Will the old (delicious) veggie patty ever come back (pre-2021)? I should give up hope…

I was recently browsing through DoorDash and a Subway advertisement popped up. I was vegetarian for pretty much all of high school and then into some college and I lived off of those veggie patties. It was the only surefire way to get a good hearty vegetarian sandwich anywhere in the country (road trips, mall food courts, the middle of nowhere rural America etc). I probably ate them on and off for 20 some years, even long after giving up vegetarianism. Then sometime five years ago or so I ordered a veggie patty expecting my tried and true long time favorite… What I got was a mushy pea-heavy baby food wet sock of a patty. Don’t get me wrong I love veggies but IMO the one currently on the menu is gross. I haven’t had Subway since.

When I saw that DoorDash ad, I had a hit of nostalgia. I thought to myself “maybe after enough complaints they changed it back from the baby food garbage that replaced it.” I remember they’re being a cult following to it and the complaints on this subreddit were real, but nope. I feel bad for the people that never got to try it. I should probably give up any hope of it returning.

The old veggie patty was unbelievably dense, had amazing texture, toasted beautifully, was very filling and actually delicious. It had mushrooms, water chestnuts, oats, eggs, carrots, wheat gluten/soy protein (structured binders) with an almost umami hit to it. I think “Garden Burger” actually made it, but it was a unique recipe only sold to Subway that cannot be bought in grocery stores.
