Glasgow Warriors - A Season in stats

I’ve nerded the Warriors Season and broken it down into numbers - now that it is over.

Appearances

As Franco reminded us post Vodacom Bulls match.  Glasgow started the season with only 38 professional players.  There were 9 debutants over the season - Dan Lancaster and Alex Craig being the only 2 professionals. Leaving us with 7 Academy players getting game time; a few of whom signed their professional contract after their debuts.

Let’s not forget Charlie Savala and Tavi Tuipulotu who spent their entire inaugural season on the injury bench.

An average of 12.375 appearances for the 48 players who took to the field.

Minutes Played

With only 48 players taking to the field the average game time is 647.73 minutes (8.10 games). Our top 5 players did some heavy lifting with over double the average game time. 22 players played greater than the team average.

6 players only featured once; Grant Stewart and Matthew Urwin for 4 minutes each, and Meatball for his swan song line break.

edit: Minutes played only include club minutes and do not include time off the pitch for a yellow card or hair ruffling.

Percentage time on Field

9 players averaged 70 minutes or over per game they played in; that is if you include Duncan Munn’s 100% game time from the 1 game he played. In total 37 players managed over 40 mins average per appearance (9 over 87.5% (70 minutes) per appearance).

Again, the outliers are Grant Stewart and Matthew Urwin with a 5% average per match (1).

Percentage Time on Field

The Go-to men - the players only ever picked as a starter.

This is the shit or bust section, they only play if their jersey number is <16.

With Franco’s preference for a 6/2 bench, it is no surprise that Backs fill the top 3 slots; the same 3 players who spent the highest percentage time on field. Closely followed by Jack Dempsey - who is used as a wrecking ball while he is on the field.

At the bottom end we have 5 players who started the season as Academy prospects (Yule 4, Watson 2, Munn 1, Johnston 1, and Ventisei 1)

Fin Richardson (7) and Hugh Jones (6) round off the list.

Glasgow Warriors v Connacht - Team

A reminder of your 23 that will run out at Scotstoun tonight

I don’t think that this is good news for the Women’s International players

Bring Players back for Central Contracts! I don’t see them getting sufficient game time in the Celtic Challenge League. Or if I am wrong does it mean that Glasgow and Edinburgh ladies will step up and be more competitive in that league? Still not PWR level

Latest Rumour: URC Grand final!!! *yes clickbaity*

I am reading on line that the SRU are prepared to derig straight after the concert on the 14th June in preparation for a Glasgow home final.

Only source I have is XVIth Warrior fan forum and claims of Offside Line *paywalled* and Scottish ‘Rugby News https://www.scotlandrugbynews.com/glasgow-warriors/news/26125470.glasgow-warriors-revisit-murrayfield-option-urc-final/ echoing this!

If true it would be good for the domestic game if Glasgow were to proceed to the final.

Congrats to all 3 2* entrants making the top 3 impossible.

The big fella gave the selector a mighty spin with 7 changes all told. A couple of more players dip out of this years 6N with injuries as Hannah Walker and Rachel McLachlan return to their teams. There’s also the opportunity for a debut off the bench for Aisha Sutcliffe. This week sees a new leadership Team as Nellie takes over as Captain and Laoch as Vice Captain.

This weeks top 2 are:

  1. u/naylev1 15 pts
  2. u/Fetch_Ted 13.5 pts
