Flying into London instead of Manchester for a Liverpool accommodation - is this a bad idea?

Hi everyone!

I'm coming to the UK for a 10 week English course in Liverpool in October.

From my country, direct flights to London (LHR) are significantly cheaper than flights to Manchester. Also, after finishing my course, I'd like to spend about a week in London before flying back home, so having my return flight from London would be much more convenient. On the way there I'll only have one suitcase, but on the way back I'll probably have two.

The problem is that if I book separate one-way tickets (to arrive in Manchester and leave from London), the outbound flight becomes much more expensive based on the quotes I've been getting.

Because of that, I'm seriously considering flying into Heathrow and then taking a train or coach to Liverpool instead of another flight.

My concerns are:

  • Would UK immigration find it unusual if I land in London but my accommodation and language school are in Liverpool? I would already have my train/coach ticket booked to Liverpool.
  • If my flight is delayed and I miss my train, how easy is it to get a National Express coach instead? Do National Express tickets become much more expensive if bought last minute, or are they usually still reasonably priced?

I'd really appreciate any advice, especially from people who've entered the UK this way.

Thanks!
