[EE vs CE for Robotics & AI] Can Electrical Engineering Still Lead to Building Robots, Drones, and AI Systems?

Hey everyone, hope you’re doing well.

I’m thinking about switching from Computer Engineering to Electrical Engineering because the CE job market feels pretty rough right now, and EE seems like it might offer broader opportunities and stronger hardware skills. I’m also planning to transfer to Virginia Tech.

I’m really interested in robotics, autonomous systems, controls, drones, and AI. One of my goals is to eventually be able to build robots and drones from scratch, both the hardware and software side. At the same time, I still enjoy programming a lot, especially AI and software-related work, so I don’t want to completely move away from the software side either.

For people already in the field, do you think EE is a good path for someone interested in robotics and AI? Will an EE background give me enough skills to work on robotics, drones, embedded systems, and autonomous systems from scratch? And are there EE specializations that combine hardware, software, and AI well?

I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thanks!
