10-day visa free policy with no hotels

Hi! We are planning a trip and my wife has relatives in Shanghai. The flight itinerary would be JFK-PVG-HND-JFK. We also don't plan to use hotels since we are staying with her relatives. The Tokyo leg of the trip we plan to travel in Japan after the China leg.

A few questions:

  1. Does the flight itinerary work?
  2. Would we be ok entering on this visa-free program without hotel reservations?

Why is Delta JFK-LAX-MNL so much more expensive than other Asian airlines

Pricing is not competitive, even with Delta's Skyteam partner Korean Air.
