Sat on tarmac for ~2 hours. Then they gave away my seat

Sort of a vent. Sort of asking is there's any recourse and whether it's worth calling to whine about it. Still, I understand air travel is ard for everyone, and I shouldn't expect everything to be perfect. And I am happy to have made it home.

BUT! Massive delays out of Newark yesterday as probably many around the NYC area experienced. We got grounded and sat on the tarmac for more than 2 hours. Fortunately, my connection was also delayed quite a bit. So I get to ATL, chill for a bit, then start boarding when they call C+.

BEEP. It says my ticket isn't vald. In fact, I am not on the flight. Or any flight out of ATL. The agent won't even look me in the face, and keeps checking people in as I stand there absolutely astonished. No more outbound flights, so I am essentially fucked. Luckily (or not) a much more confrontational man had this happen, too, and he starts flipping out. They call for a "code red", and another agent comes over to help him. Novody knows what happened. But my best guess is they thought we'd miss our flight and gave our seats away without even rebooking us.

He's arguing and getting loud, and they are able to give him a seat (First Class). I kind of sheepishly ask while this is happening if they can check my ticket and the agent shouts in my face that I'll need to wait my turn, even though I was first in line. They finally sort it out, and I end up in 37B. it's an hour flight, whatever! I made it home. But it seems lime an unbelievably fucked up situation. maybe this happens often, i don't know. I am not a complainer. But this is the first time where I'm like maybe I'll call to see if they'll at east throw me some miles for the downgrade?

Has this happened to anyone else? (maybe you're the confrontational guy, if so, I mean no disrespect.)

UPDATE:

The first person I talked to kept arguing with me saying it was just an act of God. Then I got sent to a supervisor, who again just spent the whole time "playing devil's advocate" as she said. At least got 5,000 miles. But they made me feel like I was the one being unreasonable. As one of my friends said, my loyalty to Delta despite everything they put us through needs to be studied.

Weather warning out of JFK tomorrow?? The storms were last night not tomorrow.

Received the "We’re sorry to let you know that our meteorology team is forecasting inclement weather in the New York City region that could affect your upcoming flight, DL204 from New York, New York (JFK) to Stockholm, Sweden (ARN). Delays or cancellations are possible. We encourage you to monitor local weather forecasts and take advantage of our flexible options to move your flight at no charge before or after the weather to minimize disruption to your travel plans." email just now regarding tomorrow night. I know JFK had severe weather last night and it didn't help that a sinkhole at LGA added to disruptions, but intrigued as to why I am receiving this email, perhaps it was just a blanket email sent to all Delta customers scheduled to fly out today or tomorrow because of what happened?

JFK - DTW

Hey Everyone,

I’m writing this on behalf of my partner who’s currently stuck in NYC at JFK.

He’s a first time delta flyer - he normally books with spirit but had to reschedule with delta due to the spirit shutdown. He had a flight booked out for yesterday night JFK - DTW but with the weather the flight was cancelled. At customer service he asked for a boarding pass for a 1pm flight today, they gave it to him without a designated seat. This morning when he arrived he went back to customer service and now they are saying he’s only on standby (started at 9 in standby and now he’s at 40 because he’s getting bumped due to his first time flyer status)

He’s looked at every other airport in the area, all trains are booked, and renting a car is not an option due to age. He’s also a health care worker in an ICU (he tried to use that out of necessity having to work tomorrow to no avail).

Any suggestions on what to do in this situation would be greatly appreciated, just want to make sure he gets home safe!

Update DL8719/AF378 CDG-DTW Diverted to YUL, Ebola Restrictions

Yesterday DL8719/AF378 was diverted to YUL after being denied entry to the US.

A passenger was removed who had travelled to one of the 3 African countries covered by a recent US policy restricting travelers from Ebola affected areas.

The flight continued to DTW.

Who got excited about this?

To find out nearly immediately that it was indeed, not a deal? With only four departure airports to select - and seemingly full price?

AMEX delta platinum

Considering opening this card and looking for advice.

I travel 1-2 times per year with my family. Often times we need to bring at least one checked bag due to kids (~$90 roundtrip). We have a flight in two days.

AMEX is unable to expedite the card and I will not receive the card until 7-10 business days.

  1. Is it still worth opening the card today or wait until I return?
  2. How soon can I redeem the benefits? If I open the card today and get the instant card number

via

  1. email, can I link the card to my skymiles and get the checked bags for free?
  2. Do I add the checked bags at the airport?

Flight change - is this correct?

we booked a return domestic flight a few months ago. on checkout we purchased an upgrade for the return flight to first class.

this week we need to arrive at our detonation a little earlier, so we made a flight change to the outbound leg. no fee and seats and fare class all the same, just a slightly earlier departure.

when trying to confirm the change, delta also modified the return leg. same return flight but removed our first class upgrade.

is that an expected behavior for a flight change, and if so does it make sense in future to book 2 one way flights if we think there’s a risk of changing flights?

Inflight WiFi Redirecting

Just flew from ATL to GNV which isn’t a long flight, but no inflight entertainment device, but WiFi was advertised. Instead of redirecting to DeltaWifi, it redirected to inflightinternet and didn’t have a sign in for Skymiles members, just to pay for the WiFi through their portal.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Delta gold over Amex gold

I’m thinking of getting rid of my Amex gold (still have plat) and replacing it with the delta gold. I do about 5 round trips a year and would use the card for groceries, and tickets would be first class. Would this card be worth it?

SkyMiles redemption for domestic flights are devalued to the point of uselessness.

I have a 500K plus on Delta and AA, and there is NO comparison. Delta one-way flights are consistently 35-100K for the same routes being offered for 12K to 40K on AA.

SkyMiles redemption flat-out sucks.

In 25 years of flying I’ve never seen a true crashout at a Delta gate. Currently in minute 15 of my first one at my gate right now.

They are going through the motions that they are rebooking him. But there is no way I would get in a plane with this.

Layover Leg One Change

I have an upcoming flight DTW-JFK-AMS. when booking the earliest departure time for the first leg was 10:15. I know there are earlier DTW-JFK flights and would like to switch to one to spend some time in the city, as the current option is just sort enough that it’s not worth it. Has anyone had luck moving only the first leg of the itinerary? I’d do the change myself, but it doesn’t give any earlier flights as option. Thanks!

Has anyone have 2 separate bookings linked together work properly?

I booked a flight using some delta e credit and got a confirmation code. Then my mom booked the same exact itinerary and got a different confirmation code. I had to call since my dad had to cancel a previous ticket and I claimed the e credits. The lady on the phone said that we’d be linked together (so check in separately but our seats will be together)

The route is from YWG -> MSP -> HND

And all 4 routes we’ve been separated. Luckily from MSP -> HND I was able to ask a gate agent to put us together but tomorrow I leave back home and we’ve been separated again which is frustrating. Does delta IT suck so hard or are they deliberately punishing me for booking basic?

Oh and we both got middle seats and I got the SSSS which totally makes me not more agitated about this situation.

EDIT: I looked at the seat map and saw it was a full flight so it’s pretty obvious what might’ve separated me and my mom. (Initially assumed it was an empty flight cause msp to hnd usually has a <70% load factor)

The flight to there was <70% full and me and my mom got separated. She had to print at the gate which idk if it says much.

Chances of Upgrade?

Flying this in 3 days. What are my chances of getting upgraded from MC to Delta One as a Silver? Tempted to just pay (~119K points) for the upgrade since its a vacay 😭

I’m assuming very low bcs I’m assuming all 21 people in C+ are Platinums or Diamonds :(

Need new snacks

First world (and first class) problems. I know, I know. But I’ve had to fly American the last several times and I’m telling ya, Delta needs to step up their snack game. The variety in American’s first class is really big, and it’s not all cookies and sweets. They’ve got popcorn, mixed nuts, beef sticks, cheese straws, Oreos and other things I haven’t checked out yet. Delta still has the better booze though.

DL8719 CDG-DTW

AF 378 - codeshare. (edit)
Today’s flight (5/20/26) is being rerouted mid flight. Announcement was US authorities are not allowing us to land in Detroit. FA mentioned something about a virus and they have masks on.
Not the adventure I was looking for today.

*another edit*

They turned off all WiFi 54 mins before arrival. 🫤

Now telling us to remain seated until the agreement of the Canadian authorities.

Latest update:

They’re removing a passenger who has traveled from one of the Ebola restricted areas. Following that and a refueling, we are supposed to be continuing to dtw. Pending approval from the Canadian govt to allow that passenger to deplane and the US govt to allow this plane to continue.

Hope this will be over soon. New edit!

We’ve been cleared to enter the US.
Passenger zero was removed from the back of the plane, so I personally did not witness who it was. Actually glad they didn’t need to go past me.
Front door is still open though, so not sure what we’re still waiting on.

Finally moving!!
Let’s hope our arrival at DTW is drama free!

Upgrade Eligibility

Got a flight in July w/ Delta (member status), Booked flight with Virgin (silver status), but I separately have Flying Blue Gold status. I have added the flying blue to my delta account but still appears like I cant see the upgrade list like normal. Is it the way that I booked it that causes that or something I could just call delta about? Flight is approx 50 days out.

If you have the option to connect through one of the Delta hubs, which one would you choose and why? And which would you avoid like the plague?

So I was discussing this with a friend the other day and thought Reddit would have some opinions on the matter. I live in NY so I rarely have to choose connecting flights, but if I lived somewhere else I’m not sure I would voluntarily choose to transit through JFK. There’s also Delta hubs I’ve never seen, so I wonder if they’re as chaotic as T4.

Thoughts? I’m talking overall experience here, from security, lounge, the terminal itself (food options, layout, etc), likelihood of delay, etc.

All Aboard!

I just have to share this because it happened 3 weeks ago and I cant get it out of my head.

Flying from MSP on a CRJ550. Waiting at the gate to board. I'm in 2A so I'm hoping to snag a spot in the cubby up front to put my luggage so I dont have to put it in the one behind FC. Its just a hope but if not, no big deal. I'm standing up up against the window at gate A13 (or something like that) and the GA calls for Pre Boarding, Military, I've now grabbed my suitcase handle to start walking towards boarding area and he says "OK... EVERYONE ELSE CAN BOARD NOW" mind you, I get that its like 30 people BUT STILL! My mind was absolutely blown by the absolute chaos that ensued with everyone pushing towards the boarding line.

Then... after everyone is on, the GA comes on and asks a gentleman in C+ to vacate his seat to make room for a disabled passenger and says "YOU CAN JUST SIT IN ANY OPEN SEAT" My flabbers were gasted.

My type-A, rules are meant to be followed - I crave consistency personality was reeling. What a ride.
