learning a piece you actually love is a completely different experience

spent months working through pieces i respected but didn't feel strongly about. technically useful, emotionally flat. finally started learning something i'd wanted to play for years and the practice sessions stopped feeling like work. i'd sit down intending to drill for 30 minutes and look up two hours later. motivation isn't a personality trait, it's a function of how much you care about what you're doing. pick repertoire you'd actually want to listen to.

put atlas: space on during a late study session last week and genuinely had to stop and look up from my laptop. the production is so sparse — just enough to fill the silence without crowding it.

it's the kind of music that makes a dorm room feel bigger than it is. didn't know i needed that until it happened.

i play piano so i notice comping more than most people probably do. what herbie does in the second quintet recordings is extraordinary — he's harmonically sophisticated enough to do anything he wants, and he consistently chooses restraint.

he leaves space, implies rather than states, supports without crowding. it takes more control to play less than it does to show everything you know. that's the hardest lesson in jazz piano.
