Countries with the most interesting/oldest Archaelogical sites?

I'm an otherwise very experienced traveler planning a trip to europe, and my partner and I always love seeing ancient historical monuments (I've done egypt and many of the oldest sites in Turkey, outside of having visited many other historical sights in the Americas and some parts of Asia).

What would be the country you'd recommend for old (preferably in the BC years) history? Is Greece or Italy my best bet? Are there other countries that are unexpected historical gems that might be less touristy or more unusual?

I normally lean toward the less developed world on trips, as I've often found the overall vibes very friendly and warm and humble in a way I don't experience in a big, ruthless city back home, but I've never been to Europe, so I don't know anything about what different countries and cities feel like there.

Any suggestions appreciated!
