My boyfriend's jeans ripped above the knee, so we cut both pant legs and I hemmed them to make shorts. This is the janky result.

I'm going to rip out the seams and try again. Any guidance on how to prevent the unwanted bell shape? I used a Schmetz jean needle and 100% polyester thread, because the color was the closest match to the original topstitching. The machine is a Singer Esteem II.

I don't want to take off any more length because these are already the minimum comfortable length for him.
