Fi Walking Stats

Hey guys! It's the last day of National Walk Your Dog Week, so we dug into our data for some fun, relevant stats we thought you would like to know.

Anatomy of a mile:
Chihuahuas take ~6,400 steps to walk a mile. Great Danes do it in ~3,900. No real surprises there.

Most steps per week:
Yorkies take the crown at about 189,000 steps a week!

Farthest walkers per week:
Vizslas cover the most ground, racking up about 11 miles a week. Makes sense if you've ever met one 😂

Most active month:
Dogs are most active in October, so this week's timing is pretty perfect.

Everyday stats:

  • The typical dog takes about 14,500 steps a day
  • The average dog hits 10,000+ steps on 73% of days each year
  • Puppies take about twice as many steps as senior dogs

At the end of the day, none of this really matters to your pup. Steps or miles, the best part of every walk is the time you spend together 💛

All stats are aggregated and anonymous, with no individual dog or owner identifiable, and breed rankings only include breeds with enough dogs to give a reliable number.

Fi FAQs!

Hey guys! Lauren from Fi here 👋 we wanted to address some FAQs we’ve seen recently!

Q: How long does the battery last?
A: It really depends on your dog's lifestyle and which tracker they're wearing. Series 3+/3 can go anywhere from a couple weeks to a few months on a charge depending on activity level. Fi Mini typically lasts up to 2 months. Fi Ultra is a bit different since it's always connected to LTE/GPS — expect 2-3 days per charge, or up to 5 days with Power Saving Mode turned on.

Q: How fast does Fi detect that my dog has escaped?
A: Pretty quickly! When your pet's collar reports a location outside the Safe Zone, Fi checks how confident that location fix is. If it's a strong, clear signal, Fi can send your escape alert right away. If the signal is a bit weaker, Fi waits for a second report confirming your pet is still outside the Safe Zone, just to rule out a random GPS blip. In practice, most members see their escape alert land within about two minutes.

Q: Once I know my dog is lost, how often does the map update?
A: If you have a Series 3+, Series 3, Mini, or Ultra, turning on Lost Mode gives you real-time, live tracking — the map updates continuously as your dog moves. If you have a Series 2, location updates come in about once a minute instead. These are best-case rates, update speed can vary with signal conditions.

Q: How accurate is the location shown?
A: Generally accurate to within about 60 feet when your tracker's using GPS or cellular. If it's connected over Bluetooth to your Base or your phone instead, that means your dog is very close by.

Q: Does Lost Mode drain the battery faster — and does that limit how long I can search?

A: It does use more battery since it's tracking live, so we'd recommend saving Lost Mode for real emergencies rather than everyday use. On a full charge, you've got roughly 2 days of continuous Lost Mode to work with.

Q: Does Fi sell my data?
A: No, we don't sell your personal information — that's not something we do.

Q: Why does the app need my phone's location "Always On" — isn't that excessive?
A: Totally fair question, and we hear it a lot! We only actually use your phone's location when it's helping track your dog while the device is connected to your phone via Bluetooth, which is the best battery saving mode. The "Always On" setting is there because Apple doesn't give us a way to request location access only while connected to an accessory. Without it, you'd have to manually flip location access on every single walk, which isn't exactly convenient.
