Got myself test and turned out to be negative, I am relieved.

I wanted to share my story for anyone out there who is living in constant fear of a positive status but is too afraid to get tested, either because they feel it’s not relevant or they are too anxious to face it.

I am a 25M software engineer living in Pune. I have a small, sweet family and a good job, and the thought of contracting an STD—especially HIV—was absolutely terrifying and depressing to me. A while back, I had an exposure with someone whose past sexual history was unknown to me.

About a month later, I started developing infections. I caught a cold and fever three times in a single month, felt terrible internally, and, to my surprise, even developed fungal infections. A friend advised me to get tested, and when I visited a dermatologist, they recommended the same, noting that HIV is becoming much more common among the youth.

By this point, I was incredibly paranoid. I fell down an internet rabbit hole, and the more I read about HIV and how it spreads, the more anxious I became. However, through my research and speaking with doctors, I learned a few grounding facts:

  • One act is insufficient to contact it: While the transmission risk from a single unprotected act statistically very low, it is never zero. It only takes one instance of bad luck to contract it.
  • Anyone can get it: While statistics show higher prevalence in certain demographics (like the MSM community), heterosexual transmission is very common.
  • How it spreads: In heterosexual transmission, women are biologically at a higher risk of contracting the virus. For men, transmission often occurs through micro-tears or mucous membranes on the penis.
  • PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is an emergency safety net: If you realize you've had a high-risk exposure, you don't just have to wait in fear. If started within 72 hours of the exposure, PEP is an emergency medication regimen that is highly effective at preventing the virus from taking hold.
  • PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) offers ongoing protection: If you find yourself frequently anxious about potential exposures, or if you are at higher risk, you can talk to a doctor about PrEP. It’s a medication taken beforehand (usually daily) that provides incredibly strong protection against acquiring HIV in the first place.

To share a bit about myself: I am someone who prefers to face a situation rather than constantly run away from it, which is why I decided to take the test and clear my mind once and for all. I discussed this with my girlfriend about a week ago, and she was completely supportive of me getting tested.

I was absolutely terrified when I went in for it. The reports are usually available within 8 hours, and trust me, the wait felt like a death sentence. I know that in 2026, living with HIV is entirely manageable, but I was still paralyzed by fear. I kept agonizing over how I would face my parents and how I would break the news to my girlfriend if I turned out to be positive.

Fortunately, these were just my anxieties taking over. The moment I received my report and opened it, it said "Non-Reactive," meaning I was negative. I thanked God for everything and made a firm decision never to have unprotected sex again. That day, I recited the Hanuman Chalisa 11 times, and trust me, it brought me an immense amount of peace.

To summarize: please get yourself tested. There is a high chance your results will come back negative, but it is entirely worth it for your own peace of mind.
