if you all couldnt tell by now this is a parody of the ben retelling series over on the over subreddit. i actually do like that series a lot and its way better than this, i just wanted to let ya all know

Season 2 is pretty heavily divided in the fandom, so I decided I would weigh my opinion in here. Let's get started.

I believe a lot of this season's issues comes down to pacing and inconsistency. Inconsistency with its character writing, decision-making, and overall plot.

Meanwhile, the pacing, it's almost break-neck in how the events play out.

Why are Matthew and Walter killed off so early when you could keep Walter for the drama with Nick? Why are we only in Howe's for at most 2 days? Couldn't you've kept us there for the next episode and potentially the finale to fully expand on Carver's character and the 400 Days characters like you SAID you would?

I think a lot of the CONCEPTS of Season 2 are excellent.

The concept of Nick's character? Excellent. Sarah? Cool. A final fight scene that is the overall climax of building tensions between two characters? Literally YES, please.

The problem with all of this is the execution. Think about Nick, he tries his best to protect his friends despite his flaws, and he has a lot of them. He's prideful, arrogant, a drunk, often makes fatal mistakes that may or may not kill innocent people. That is such a good concept for a character.

AND THEY DO NOTHING WITH IT.

On that, let's just speed through some of these characters:

(CLEMENTINE)

Clementine's character in this season is pretty good, honestly. She's probably my second favorite Clem right behind the first season. The problem is we shouldn't be playing as her and the game knows that.

It'll make these snide little jokes like, "Ooooh why is it always meeee, lil ole meeeee" they KNEW this was an issue in the game's "realism"

I know that some people say that it's "apart of Clementine's development" which, I think now is true, like what type of survivor is your Clem gonna be? That's cool. That's fine.

I just think that there could've been a better way to retain Clementine's survivor development while also making sure that the other characters don't suffer because of it. As it is now, the cabin group are easily seen as the most incompetent main group in the series.

(This is why Ben should've lived, he fixes most of the issues in this season but y'all are NOT ready for that conversation.)

(LUKE)

Luke. What does he even do. I don't hate his character or anything, if anything I think he serves as a great contrast to Nick. Luke makes a lot of mistakes that also cause harm or even causes lives, but he gets away with it more because ehhh I dunno, pretty boy status.

But then again, I have to ask myself, what does he even do? Be a semi-decent person, which is cool. But they hint that there is MORE to his character and they never do anything with it. Like his connection with Carver. His relationship with Bonnie. His brewing tension with Kenny-- But once again, they don't do anything with it and that sucks.

(NICK)

I already talked enough about Nick, but I think he's really indictive of a lot of the issues that plagued this season. He really should've been a character in Season 1 if I'm being honest.

Also his death sucks.

(SARAH)

Why do people hate this character so much? "She's annoying," have you seen yourself in the mirror?

Anyways, Sarah is also one of those characters that represent another issue that plagues this whole goddamn franchise: "Illusion of Choice," yeah, yeah, you've already heard this probably. But with Sarah it is horrible. The game makes you THINK you're helping Sarah survive, all the... one gun training scenes, all the pep talks, the comforting, all of that-- does not matter. Because even if you do save her, the game just takes her away 20 minutes later in the dumbest death scene in-- nah, that's still Nick.

That sucks because I love Sarah. She's incredibly sweet, and if what was shown is anything to go by, she had a lot of potential to be a great survivor. I don't blame Sarah at all for being the way that she is, that's all on--

(CARLOS)

Jack of all Trade, master of none ass character.

Carlos is easily the most boring member of the cabin group. So I'm not gonna spend too much time on him. But he's also wasted potential like Luke, mainly with his connection with Carver, like what did he do to make him that mad? But honestly, I could care less for his character. Moving on.

(PETE)

He's cool.

(REBECCA AND ALVIN)

Rebecca is bi-polar and I wish Alvin had more screen-time.

(CARVER)

I think a large majority of why Carver is seen as the best villain is due to the great performance by Michael Madsen and his imitating aura, rather than his actual writing because oh, boy, they had no clue what to do with this character.

They build up his character quite excellently up until his reveal by early Episode 2. There's so much mystery as to who this guy is, and what his deal with the group is. His introductory scene had me re-guessing who we were even with, because yeah, they ARE shady as hell.

But then in Episode 3 they make this man into a cartoon villain. His philosophy becomes so simplistic, "we are strongggg Clementine, they are weakkkk, weak like sheep. the stronggg are stronggg, the weak are weak--" like shut up, give it a rest. The worst part is, he's proven right by the game, ALL of these characters that Season 2 introduces (besides AJ I guess) are either dead or are unknown (basically also dead) so I guess in a way, he was proven right? Whatever bro.

(KENNY)

Boy-oh-boy, here I go ruffling feathers again.

Kenny's arc in Season 2 is the most pointless, watered-down, cookie-cutter retelling of his original (better) arc from Season 1.

Think about it, it's the same beats as Season 1. Kenny starts off jolly, maybe a little off and flawed, but hey, it's Kenny, what're gonna do? Then, he's put into an uncomfortable situation and he starts arguing with people before working together and getting out of the situation. But THEN-- *gasp for dramatic effect* a part of his world gets fractured because of-- things and now he's all "Grrrr. Now, I'm really mad!" and he takes his anger out on anyone that he feels may've wronged him (Ben/Clem) before ultimately apologizing and sacrificing his life for that person. (Ben in the alley/Wellington)

Like... what was the point of any of this? Why bring him back if you're just going to do his character worse? Maybe not even worse, per say, just, more dull I guess. I'm not even going to talk about Sarita because she isn't a character. She's a plot device to drive Kenny's arc. They don't give her a backstory, they don't even let her interact with any character besides Kenny unless it's about the plan. She isn't a character, and thus, I will not treat her like one.

Also, do they want me to see the other characters as idiots? Because they're idiots. Every time the game would say, "Oh, that Kenny, he sure is crazy!" I'm like, "No?" I don't even like Kenny in this season and I KNOW he's right about almost everything involving Arvo.

(JANE)

Hah. No.

(MIKE, BONNIE, AND ARVO)

Bonnie was almost spared in my original playthrough because I accidentally let her and Luke drown, but then on another playthrough... yeah, no, she's the worst character. Besides Arvo. Fuck Arvo. Mike is also alive I guess.

(OVERALL THOUGHTS)

Those are my thoughts on Season 2. What do I think of the whole thing? It's not good, but I don't hate it. I don't even dislike it. How much of that has to do with nostalgia? ...most of it, yeah.

But there's things about this game that I do love.

Like, I do love Clementine, Sarah, Pete anddddd Nick I guess. The music is fire, the atmosphere is probably my favorite out of any of the games, and I do love the more darker and bleak tone of the game. This is also probably my favorite looking Walking Dead game, the first game looks pretty dated, the third game looks like everyone was covered in baby oil, and The Final Season is also there.

There is so much to enjoy in Season 2, but an equal amount to critique as well. I wish I could say that the positive outweighed the negative for me, but more times than not, that wasn't the case.
