Recent Sociology MA Grad Looking for Advice

As the title says, I recently graduated with a sociology degree and I am ready to walk away from academia (or so I think). In short, the experience I had during my program made me realize it is not for me even before the state of academia made the turn it has made. I really enjoy sociology and doing research, but I am unsure how that is possible to do without being affiliated with a university. I also want to stay involved and make connections with other sociologists. For reference my primary research interest is Haitian migration to the US with a broader desire to incorporate Black immigrants in research and advocacy. I am also based in the DMV and want to meet more people in the field and attend events. Any advice helps even if it's straight up telling me my vague idea is unrealistic.

Community Support Re: Tenleytown Shooting

*repost

Late last week, there was a shooting at the Tenleytown metro stop area and unfortunately the student who was shot passed away. I am not too far from the area and frequented it a lot bc I was an AU student. I was wondering if there are any parents of students at Jackson-Reed High School (or community members in general) know if there are anyway for the broader tenleytown community to show up for the family and high school students during this time. I couldn’t imagine how everyone is feeling with things with the school year coming to an end and something so tragic happening to a student who was probably looking forward to graduation and whatever plans he had. Thanks in advance.
