Stella's Dillies

While looking through my mom's American Everyday Cookbook (1955, second edition), I found a dill pickle recipe handwritten by her mom back in the 1970's. I remember them making pickles together and they were quite good. Nana passed in 2003 at the age of 94. Mama's still with me at 90.

Stella's Dillies

1 cup vinegar

2 cups water

2 tbs pickling salt

In jar - 1 garlic clove

2 heads fresh dill

2 grape leaves

1/4 tsp alum

1/4 tsp turmeric

1 tsp mustard seed

Pack jars and pour boiling brine to overflow, seal immediately.

For hamburger dill slices same as above, and boil gently for 5 minutes.

Reply to Hurray! message?

The first card I ever sent out was received and I got my first Hurray! message today. Is it customary to reply to the thank you message from the recipient? If so, is a quick "glad you liked it" sufficient? Their reply was cordial but didn't leave openings for carrying on a conversation. I don't want to start out on the wrong foot, though.

Sending my second card

This one is going to Japan. Hope they like it.

I almost messed up: I left a digit out of the ID number and had to correct it in two places. Whew! So happy that was caught that before mailing the card!

The Whole Gang 2017 - 4 tuxies and a void

The void is Jack in the green collar. The grey tuxie (top middle) is Bob, his collar was purple. Lilly has a pink collar and her brother Maxey has blue. Fred (top right) has a red collar you really can't see. Color coding the cats made it easier to tell the youngest three (Fred, Maxey and Lilly) apart at a glance.
