TIL: Heisman winners drought for Hall of Fame
TIL the longest drought between Heisman winners that eventually were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame is now (nobody since 1997 winner Charles Woodson has made it in).
Derrick Henry will break that streak (2015 winner) and make it 18 years when he's inducted.
The previous longest was only 9 years (1988 Barry Sanders to 1997 Charles Woodson).
Members of both (10):
- 1948 Doak Walker
- 1956 Paul Hornung
- 1963 Roger Staubach
- 1968 OJ Simpson
- 1976 Tony Dorsett
- 1977 Earl Campbell
- 1981 Marcus Allen
- 1987 Tim Brown
- 1988 Barry Sanders
- 1997 Charles Woodson
Guys that were notable but won't make it in:
- 1998 Ricky Williams (good player, 10000 rushing yards, but not good enough)
- 2002 Carson Palmer (almost won an MVP)
- 2005 Reggie Bush (0.0% chance he gets in)
- 2007 Tim Tebow (100% chance if the Hall of Fame was actual fame and not accolades)
- 2009 Mark Ingram (not good enough)
- 2010 Cam Newton (actually has a >0% chance but no)
- 2013 Jameis Winston (I guess technically he could still play a long time and miraculously make the streak 16 years)
