Clients expecting something “new” each time

Wondering how others handle this. I am still new in the field and find myself still very much trying to people please and am a bit of a pushover. I have a few home health clients (early elementary age) who seem to expect me to bring something new and exciting each session and will refuse to play a game or do an activity they have done before. There’s not enough time in the day or space in my car to making everything individualized and new each time. I never bring the same activity game two sessions in a row unless specifically asked. I try and give the “well these are your options today, what do you want me to bring next time?” Approach but curious how others handle this when it occurs?

On another note, I have another client who spends 3 minutes on each game/activity and is over it and wants something else and literally has gone through my bag of stuff in 15 minutes. How do I approach this? I don’t want to be restrictive but at the same time it’s super frustrating when you have another 30 minutes of them not wanting to do that activity “again.” I try to encourage finishing the activity before starting a new one but they will just shut down and refuse to participate until they get a new activity that they want.

I realize these aren’t end all be all behaviours but just something that I’d like others perspectives on how they work around it.

Online grad schools

I’m considering getting my masters in the US but currently live in Canada so I’m looking for online programs. What ones are there out there? Which ones do you recommend / not recommend? Bonus if you can let me know what it’s like to apply as a Canadian.

Online part time schools?

I’m currently a CDA (SLPA) in Canada and have been working in the field for almost two years. I’m considering pursuing an online master’s degree (preference on part time ones.)

Unfortunately, most Canadian programs don’t take my work experience into account, and I’m also missing some of the undergraduate prerequisite courses (mainly the science requirements), so I’m not eligible for many of the programs close to me.

I’ve heard that some US programs, may place more value on relevant work experience. If anyone has recommendations for online (preferably part time) programs, I’d really appreciate any recommendations or ones to avoid.

I’m not completely set on applying yet, but I’d love a good starting point to begin researching my options.

Shy Client - game ideas?

I have a new client I’m seeing soon for the first time in home. The SLP saw them virtually and was unable to do a thorough assessment due to shyness. They asked me to try and do a language and articulation screener since I (slpa) will be in person. That being said, I’m a little anxious about not being able to complete it due to their shyness. What are some games, toys etc I could bring to build rapport but also try and get these screeners done? Any suggestions or tips at all are welcome!

Solo activities

Hi everyone, now that summer is here I find myself having more free time but not sure what to do. I’m mid twenties and I don’t have many friends to do things with so I’m looking for various activities I could do solo to fill my free time. Doesn’t necessarily have to be free but nothing with a long term commitment. I am a little anxious about doing things solo and putting myself out there but I want to get myself out of the house more. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Narrative retell help

I have a client working on narrative retell. We have been using story champs with the icons including 7 story grammar markers. They are able to identify each grammar component (problem, action ending etc) but when asked to re tell the story even when provided the icon visuals they are unable to smoothly retell and will just restate each story component ie “the character is ___, the setting is ___” rather than “John was riding his bike…” How do I teach more fluent retell of the narrative? It almost seems like once they need to add details they forget the whole story all together and cling to just reiterating only the story parts.

Nouns, verbs & adjectives

I have a new kiddo with a goal of expanding new vocab including nouns, verbs and adjectives. I’m a little lost on how to target this as I mainly do artic. Should I start with one at a time and is there a particular order on which to start with first if so? What are some activities I could do for this? I was thinking of starting with simply labelling but not sure if that’s a good first step or if it aligns with the goal.

Early intervention help

Hi everyone, I’m an slpa who’s been in the field for just over a year in the home health setting. I’ve recently gotten a lot of kiddos for early intervention. I was wondering if anyone had any general tips or resources?

I am finding im really struggling to connect with this age and they have goals such as will request/direct x many times and I can barely get most of them to engage with me let alone get any language out of them at all and im finding not only myself but parents also getting frustrated and I feel like im not able to do my job…. Any kind of suggestions/feedback is appreciated.

I am unfortunately the only one in the area so I can’t transfer them to someone else otherwise I likely would. I have contacted the SLP I’m working under for these kiddos just haven heard back and im feeling a little defeated.

Irregular plurals

I have a student working on irregular plurals and they just don’t seem to be getting it. I’ve done a lot of modelling, and visuals and explaining common changes ie f to ves and animals often not changing etc and even after providing a delayed verbal model of an irregular plural they will use it incorrectly. For example we played a matching game, I flipped over “feet” so I said “oh I got the feet card. The guy in the picture is showing his two feet.” And then put the card back which then the student grabbed and not even 30 seconds later was saying “the guy is showing his foot’s.” Anyone have any suggestions on what else I could try? Or do I just keep drilling away with lot of models of these irregular plural words

Edit: I’m just the slpa so I was given this goal.
