Danger of AI taking our jobs

Obviously, if AI keeps improving, every job, from farming to tech support will be automated one day and I'm not so much worried about.

What I'm worried about is whether AI will take our jobs ahead of the curve, before the government gets around to regulating it or instituting some kind of UBI so half the population doesn't go homeless (I'm not even going to entertain the idea that civilisation is going to collapse or something).

The danger:

  • We're computer based desk workers
  • We mostly work for large corporations or on software made by large corporations

Reasons to be optimistic:

  • Our job requires more physical presence than your average desk job (picking parts/inspecting vehicles/warehousing etc
  • Aftermarket parts/bodywork etc aren't usually listed on the manufacturer's software which means an AI agent would need to be designed to interface with several different systems and catalogues, which may prove difficult
  • Often customers don't even know what they want or what to call what they want. Even if AI tools get implemented, they may still require a skilled pilot
  • AI advancement is potentially slowing down, the implementation of AI may be slow enough that natural attrition outpaces the increase in efficiency. Instead of one mass layoff, we may simply see that sometimes people don't get replaced when they quit.

I know Reddit loves to act like AI is causing the sky to fall, but I'm not super worried. I'm reasonably confident that our jobs will still be safe by the time AI starts coming for all the white collar email jobs and the government steps in.

Digital Magic

I'm wanting to start a Necron army but I have one issue.

Is anyone else not a fan of the pixelated energy effects the newer Necron models come with? I just feel like it's too low tech for the Necrons and looks a bit cartoony.

Has anyone had any luck removing these effects? If so, I'd love to see your results for inspiration.

Small talk

I'm kind of autistic and I'm not really into trucks despite the fact I've been selling parts for them for years, I just got this job because I'm good with computers and numbers.

I feel like the main thing holding me back is the fact that I can't really manage to get the customers to like me when I'm serving them, I'm just very business-like and efficient.

Do any of you have any go to talking points or scripts when talking to customers to make you seem a bit more personable?

I'm sure plenty of you are going to say that this is unnecessary and that people just want to get in and out ASAP, but in my area, being the customer's friend really is important.

Anticipating a Cancer diagnosis

I'm in the process of getting tested for some things and the doctor has verbally said that he thinks I most likely have some kind of blood cancer (probably Myaloma) but he wants to do a bunch more tests before he puts any kind of official diagnosis into the system.

I'm not sure how the public health system and health insurance work, I just have a bare bones plan to prevent the medicare surcharge.

Does it become harder/more expensive to change plan after you get a serious diagnosis like that? Would it be worth upgrading my coverage now, before there is any pre-existing condition on paper? Also, do I even need private health insurance for cancer treatment or is it all public?
