Is it true that if a door has a transom, you cannot replace it with a pre-hung set that does not include the transom?
I read that in this case, you can replace the door with a slab door, and it is very difficulty, requiring high precision to make everything fit together seamlessly.
Right now a pre-hung door costs $1500 more than a slab - with the EXACTLY same door. If the transom must be custom made - which I suspect to be the case, as I don't seem to see many standard sizes or shapes of the transoms, the cost would be significantly higher.
I'm going to hire a skilled carpenter for the job. Is slab door a good way to go? Did you have experience with using a slab door for replacement?
I'm attaching a picture of my door her. The home is 21 years old and the door frame is good.
