Legit casting insight: who could play Layne in a biopic?

OK so I just had an ephiphany. I always wondered who could have EVER depicted Layne in a biopic or something, but now I think I know who could do it. Just saw it for the first time and COMPLETELY saw it, Matthew McConaughey in the movie Frailty (2001).

Frailty-era Matthew McConaughey had:

  • this gaunt, haunted Southern-Gothic intensity
  • hollowed-out eyes
  • quiet charisma
  • strange gentleness mixed with danger
  • and the feeling that he was carrying some private unbearable knowledge at all times
  • thousand-yard stare
  • spiritually burdened cheekbones, “there are things in this world people don’t understand…”
  • fragile but intense masculinity
  • intelligence mixed with damage
  • vulnerability hidden under weird calmness
  • and that almost ghostlike quality Layne had later on
